Horror Movie #2

Hm. I should get a horror movie icon, LOL.

We watched Fido last night, which is a Canadian zombie movie. It's set in an alternate 50s era, where Space Radiation caused the dead to come back to life as zombies, resulting in the great Zombie War. A corporation, Zombicom, figured out a way to harness the zombies, though, and people use them as cheap labor and also as a status symbol because they are expensive.

The focus of the film is on a family who obtain a zombie, in part to keep up with their next door neighbors. Following the lead of their pre-teen son, though, the family starts treating their zombie servant/slave/status symbol as more of a member of the family.

This, of course, leads to problems.

The movie plays with all kinds of stuff like the nature of death and what being a zombie means, social status, the class system, hypocrisy, all kinds of good stuff. Like a lot of really good horror films, the setting is a middle class suburban picture-perfect neighborhood. The horribleness takes place beneath the bland, common surface. There's also some interesting playing with gender roles.

Check this movie out, it's pretty good. Not super hugely scary, more of a comedy, but still really good.
