Of American stupidity [random, wtf, public post]

There was a newsarticle about the Analyser {who is supposed to be the Brain behind stealing thousands of credit card numbers} today. I didn't keep it as a clipping, because it really doesn't interest me. Only one thing caught my attention, and even that thing was a tiny explenation blurb at the side of the article.

The segment basically says this: The Analyser, Israeli-born hacker, was arrested for hacking the Pentagon's, US military and NASA's computers when he was eighteen.

Dropping off the "Israeli-born hacker" and the "when he was eighteen"; that's not what caught my attention.

The thing that DID catch my attention was the "was arrested for hacking the Pentagon's, US military's and NASA's computers".

At a first glance it looks okay, really. The guy hacked some important stuffs' computers, and now he has to pay for it. Right?

This raises two questions, and the questions lead me to believe that the US govt. is truly stupid.

One, if the guy hacked computers used for classified operations and information, why were the computers connected to the internet in the first place? We all know about phishing, viruses, adware, spyware, etc.. We also know about employees who have only partial access to the internet -- they will automatically want to get around that, and they don't always know how to protect themselves from malware. In other words, classified information should be kept only in classified networks, that have no access to the World Wide Web. If that had truly happened, this Analyser wouldn't have had anything to hack.

Two, if the sensitive information really was kept in secure networks, then he only hacked something everybody has access to. Like, say, recruitment sites, or general information sites. In that case, why did the govt. arrest him? How is hacking a site a federal offence? If hacking is a federal offence, then why doesn't the govt. arrest every single hacker? Don't give me bullcrap about not finding the hackers; they obviously found an Israeli hacker and sent him to jail in Israel. For hacking a public site, that coincidentally belongs to some important organisations.

In other words, either the US government is plain stupid, or unfairly stupid. I don't like neither. :V *bites*
