Well, actually the whole thing started already on Friday. I was having a toothache, not a bad one, but still, it ached. But since I just visited my usual dentist a month and a half ago and he said that everything looked to be ok with my teeth, I just thought it couldn't be anything serious and thus only took some painkillers and tried to forget the whole thing (BIG MISTAKE!). Until this morning I woke up around 6 o'clock because not only my tooth but also the whole right side of my jaw was hurting like hell. I went to the bathroom to get some more painkillers and while searching for them from the cupboard I looked into a mirror and realized that my jaw wasn't only hurting but also completely swollen.
So I searched through the net to find out where I could get any help on Sunday morning. I found out from the website of City of Helsinki that there is only one place where you can get dental care in emergency situation on Sunday and it opens at 8.30 am. So there I was, my jaw hurting and swollen and me totally tired, but unable to get any more sleep, just waiting for two hours before I could phone to the dentist on call and, boy, where those two hours long...
Then, when it was finally 8.30, I called to the number they gave on that website and luckily the nurse picked up immediately. She just asked me, what was wrong and then for my social security number and then just said :"Well, how soon can you be here?". I was totally surprised, because usually getting to a dentist or any kind of a doctor in here takes for God knows how long. I told her that it would take me around a half an hour to be there, to which she answered: "Ok, just get going right away then and try to be here as fast as you can".
I arrived to the dentist a few minutes before nine and only had to wait for like 15 minutes before it was my turn. The dentist was extremely nice, but I had to spent almost an hour there while she was trying to help me the best she could at that point. And then I got a prescription for two different kinds of antibiotics and for some painkillers and drove straight to the nearest on-call pharmacy to get them.
And now I'm finally back home. I started the antibiotics already, but naturally they haven't had any time to work yet, so my jaw is still totally swollen and still hurting a bit and I'm dead tired...But I hope the drugs will start to help soon. The dentist also told me that I needed to visit my own dentist at least two more times so that he can continue the care she was only able to start this morning and if the antibiotics don't work in two or three days (like if the situation isn't getting any better or is getting worse) I would need to call either him or her immediately...
At least the one thing I learned from this is, that I will never ever again disregard a toothache, because it will most definitely only get worse. If I manage to get any sleep today or next night I might realize that I've learned something else as well, but now I'm just way too tired to think ;).
