Today instead of taking the freeway to the nursing home, I took the back streets and was utterly amazed at the beautiful colors that surrounded me. This is such a pretty time of year and I need to remember to carry my camera whenever I leave the house. Theresa was doing a little better tonight - compared to yesterday, that is. I did her nails, and wanted to do her hair, but she said she was too tired to wait for the iron to heat up and besides, she wanted to hear about my guitar classes. So I told her how I loved them, how it's really hard for me to move my fingers on the strings to get the different chords, and how I am determined to be able to play at least one song before the end of the year.
She always listens patiently to me and her advice tonight was to take it slow and to practice every day. She's not even one month shy of 100, so I'm pretty sure she knows what she's talking about. She said she's waiting for me to bring my guitar back and play for her. I don't know how long my old friend is going to be around, and I don't want to let her down.
When I got home, I made sure to get a little bit of practice time in. On Thursday we're learning a new chord, and I have got to learn the two I've been working on, or I'll look like a total fool.
Later, Ira and I watched a little television - Beauty and the Geek - my favorite reality show - and I worked on some mittens I'm making for Amelia - pink and black to match her coat. She's going to be so excited when she sees them because I had barely started them before she left on Sunday.
Last weekend Amelia and I picked out her Halloween costume. She gets to dress up next week for dance class and she couldn't be more excited. I was surprised because she decided to go as Super Girl instead of the usual "princess" type of character she usually picks out. Her outfit has not one spot of pink anywhere!! I have to say she looked absolutely adorable in it and I couldn't help but laugh because she insisted on accessorizing it with a pearl necklace and matching bracelet! You can take the little girl away from the glammor, but you can't take the glammor away from the little girl! Some things will never change!
Later that evening we had a nice dinner out with some friends of ours - Rick and Rebeca - Amelia really likes them a lot, and they're crazy about her, but we've started being more careful about who she gets attached to these days. You just never know who you can trust anymore and she's had more than a few people abandon her after she's gotten so attached to them. Sometimes I wonder if that's one of the reasons she's so soft-hearted and kind to people - is she afraid everyone's going to leave?
On a positive note - she's doing incredible at school and she loves it. Her teacher says she's everyone's friend and whenever someone doesn't know an answer to something, she can most often be sure that Amelia does. It's nice having a smart and sweet little girl!
