"hey man wats up?? i read your journal entries all the time. your last entry you asked people to suggest a topic for you to write on. can you do an entry on piracy, places like kazaa and downloading music for free. peace

Dan, NC USA"

What is up you everyone. System 86 here. So my last journal post I did ask some people to give me suggestions, and well I really liked what Dan asked cuz well this is kind of a recent issue with me. See, I got some friends in bands who have just finished their new cd and it is not in stores yet and their album already leaked on the net. This has happened to 4 bands I know in the past 2 months.

So here is my take on downloading music; the good and the bad side... and most important, my solution to this problem.

the good
-people get to check out bands they normally wouldn't.
myself personally, i know i have checked out many bands from things like kazaa, cuz a lot of bands don't make it to canada, and well i like to hear new music.
-bands gain more fans
-better show attendance for bands on tour
-good promotion.

the bad
-you are ripping off the artist
-bands make less money
-labels don't support their bands who make no money...

ok, now i could go on but that is enough points. let me elaborate on them. Lars from Metallica once said if the band wants to give their stuff away for free it should be up to them, and i agree. Metallica doesn't need the money, and people look at Lars as money hungry, i don't see it that way at all. I think he is just helping protect the bands that need it.

If bands get less cd sales the label makes less money. If the label is making no money on the band, why would they invest money back into them? Ozz-fest is a huge tour... most bands on it have their labels pay $30,000-$75,000 to get them on the tour. It is a big risk for labels. making no money off of bands means less new bands, more bands getting dropped and so on. that is not cool at all.

people like myself will download the songs, like them and buy the record. that is all cool. but some people download, like it, and burn it. that is not cool. you cannot go into a record store take an album home and sample the music with out paying for it. its the music business... without the business there is no music.

now some people want to just hear new stuff and have intention of buying, and others have no intention on paying money for something they can get for free.

so here is my solution. people who are for free music want free music cuz they believe its about the music, the artist gets more fans, or it shouldn't be about money even tho sadly it is. and people who are against it feel that it is stealing, and myself i see it as robbing bands who are friends of mine, i see it as bands making no money. i see it as labels saying "sorry, you make us no money. you are dropped" i see it as only big huge bands making money, and smaller bands getting no where. think of bands back in the day who went from being small to getting big. like Korn. if they were a new band and no one bought their shit cuz they all just downloaded it... would their label have invested time and money into them to make them huge? probably not. so this is what every record labels should do.

piracy is so simple even really computer stupid people can download mp3z and burn them to cd. SO all labels should do this. Create fake files of songs. spend money on fake servers with clips of the songs, or another new thing is to have the song with several parts in the song where is stops for advertising. If the labels creates hundreds of files for these songs, it will practically make finding real versions of songs so hard and annoying that no one will just stick with burning cd's. cuz really who wants a cd from a band they love to be full of adds and weird noises or just clips looped over and over? no one. if labels do this people can still check new artists, bands can gain fans, get exposure, and not lose on record sales. seems to me this is the perfect solution. labels should pool their money together to create a huge empire of fake sound files. It will make them billions in the end. then they can send me money for coming up with the perfect idea.

so Dan, i hope that answered your question. if anyone agrees or disagrees with me, and the points i made, feel free to let me know. i stand by what i said, i don't mind debating the topic, or giving reasons to back up what i said. this is a topic i have so much of an opinion on, it is kinda hard to say what i wanted to say with out making a novel out of this post. its long enough right now. so if i left out key things call me on it, and i will be more then happy to prove to you how i am right, and everyone else isn't.

until next time...
