One Ring to bring them all and to fire Peter Jackson with, apparently.

According to Peter Jackson, the word came down from Mark Ordesky -- an executive from New Line Cinema -- last week. Mr. Ordesky telephoned to inform Peter that he and Fran Walsh (and it's safe to assume Phillipa Boyens) will ( Read more... )

Wait, they have the rights to make a SECOND LotR prequel?

Does that mean they're doing the Silmarillion? My God, why?

The Silmarillion is my assumption as well, but as they haven't expressly said as much, I didn't want to claim it as fact.

I'll admit that I'm a fanboy of Lord of the Rings, but I'm a quiet one. That doesn't make me less weird than the crazies that run around in chainmail, though. I spent the better part of my youth obsessing over the books, whose themes and content shaped and molded my personality and how I viewed the world. To a large part, they still do today. I don't run around yelling rabble rabble rabble about the movies, and in all actuality, I generally avoid watching them with others. It's mostly because I can't stop myself from crying when I watch them (with the exception of booing the constant putting down of gimli).

So I'll draw a line in the sand. I can promise that if Jackson doesn't get the opportunity to direct the upcoming prequels, I will personally boycott New Line Cinema and all their subsidaries as long as I live, and I will do my utmost to convince others to do likewise. It is, of course, still Mr Jackson's choice, but there's my 2 cents worth. I'll do whatever is within my power to destroy that company, for good or ill.
