I don't have any experience with eating disorders but this felt true and not OOC at all.

Good job

Having suffered through anorexia, bulemia, and other eating disorders, I know for a fact that men suffer from these types of illnesses also. I liked seeing vulnerable Steve (IMO, that's what he is here) and maybe, with Danny's (and his other Ohana's) help, Steve will be okay.

Yeah that's definitely true. BED is actually thought to be about equally common between genders.
Sorry you went through all that.

I thought this was very plausible. If you look at some of the pictures of Alex when he was having problems with prescription pain pills, it could conceivably be haggardness due to eating disorders. I love how supportive Danny is at the end.

How awful that you have gone through this! I hope that there is some sort of closure for you, learning techniques for healthy eating at regular meals. I don't know much about BED, but I am sure it can be worse than other addictions because you can't quit eating like you can quit drugs or smoking or gambling. You still have to eat to live. So I hope you are doing better now.

Thank you so much for your review and support.
I hope there's closure for me too. Where I am is really where Steve is at the end of the fic. Just beginning the road to recovery.

Powerful story. Having been a binge eater for many years, I could totally relate to this. (I never did the purging part though.) The memories of all the yo-yo dieting in the Navy and trying to pass the PT tests, weigh-ins and measurements (quarterly!) are still as vivid as if they were yesterday.
Now I still fight with the VA; they keep putting me on SSRIs for the PTSD, but that causes insatiable munchies and more weight gain, so I keep trying to do without it. It's a constant battle. Would love to see if Steve confides in Danny and how Danny would help him with it.
Excellent work on this serious piece!

Oops, got the quarterly part wrong. Sorry. Glad the rest rang true (only in terms of writing as someone not in the military, of course).

I've been on SSRIs too for depression/anxiety. I did gain some weight, but only about 5 lbs. The BED is what really does it. Citalopram helped a little. It's no miracle drug, but it was ok as a temporary measure.

I may continue. It just depends on how I feel. About how Danny might help... that's tricky because at the moment I'm not personally sure there is anything unaffected loved ones can do besides still love you.
It might be interesting to explore reactions illustrating how hard it is to understand. I find it hard to get people to take you seriously, and from what I read it's even worse for men because there's a double standard with eating. After all if a woman eats a whole pizza most would be disgusted, but if a man does you usually don't think much of it because guys are supposed to have big appetites.
