Stern was wandering back to his room from the cafeteria, thinking about maybe reading a book or taking an afternoon nap, when he noticed one of the previously empty rooms’ door open and took a peek inside. There were suitcases and boxes, with a guy dressed in white bent over them, rummaging around inside.
Figuring there was no harm in introducing himself, he tapped on the door with a couple of knuckles, “Hi?”
The guy quickly stood up and turned around, and then had to blow and flick his - nice and shiny - hair out of his eyes before he looked at Stern and gave a wide beaming smile that made Stern’s stomach twist in an odd way. “Hi!”
Stern managed to swallow and recover as quickly as he could, “Have you just moved in?” Although maybe he hadn’t recovered, given how stupid a question that was when the room was full of boxes and suitcases and nobody had been living there before.
The handsome man didn’t give any indication of thinking that was a stupid question though, “Yeah, the taxi just dropped me off. I’m Bennie,” he said, offering his hand, “Bennie Beckett.”
Stern willed his arm to move so he could shake Bennie’s hand, “Stern Ryman.” Then he mentally recoiled and quickly explained with a nervous laugh, “I know it’s a weird name, but that’s parents for you…”
Bennie raised his eyebrows and then gave a laugh that made Stern’s twisted stomach turn over. “You think that’s weird? Bennie’s short for Benevolence.”
Stern’s jaw dropped a little. “… Benevolence?”
“Yeah, try living with that,” Bennie laughed that laugh again. “But me and my siblings are all like that: Benevolence, Obedience, Openness, Optimism, Order and Ability. But most of us get nicknames to get around it: Bennie, BD, Penny, Tim, Billy… Sadly we couldn’t do anything for Order, but five out of six isn’t bad. Oh, and that’s something else about my family: six kids…!”
Stern suppressed a smile. “Wow, that’s a lot.”
“Yeah, I know: my parents are crazy…”
“I’m the fourth child out of seven.”
Stern was pleased at the look of surprise on Bennie’s face. “Oh. Wow.”
“Yeah.”
“So I guess my parents win in terms of crazy names, and your parents win in terms of crazy amounts of kids,” he laughed.
“Yeah, I guess so.”
They stood there just grinning at each other for a few moments, Stern trying to stop his lightheaded feeling long enough to think straight and do what he had the increasingly strong urge to do.
“I er- I don’t suppose you’d fancy going to get a coffee later? You know, once you’re done unpacking or whatever.”
Bennie waved a hand dismissively, “Unpacking can wait - we can go now,” he beamed.
Stern let out a slightly shaky breath as he struggled not to stare at that gorgeous smile and eyes, “Fantastic.”
