Other: Set in Afterlife future, when they've both been there quite a while. Rodney discovers something unexpected about himself, fluff ensues.
Rodney dried his hands and checked his appearance in the mirror. Well, he checked his hair and parting anyway; he remained uncertain as to what was good or bad that he could control about the rest of his face. Seth could probably go completely blind and he'd still maintain that Rodney was 'gorgeous'. As for anyone else... Well, they probably wouldn't get past who he was enough to consider anything good about his appearance anyway. Not that Seth thought their opinions were worth anything, but everything was easier for Seth to say.
He sighed and turned to the bathroom door and... It wasn't opening. He tried the lock again, pushed the handle down harder - he must be doing something wrong - but still it wouldn't open.
The sensible conclusion of his own mistake effectively ruled out, he had to consider the less likely ones, and heaven help him if he wasn't still prone to paranoia, despite all the progress he'd made against it. It wouldn't be Hideki - Hideki was not dead yet - far more likely to be Seth. And Seth wasn't randomly just going to turn evil - and even if he was, would that turning act really be locking Rodney in a bathroom? If it was Seth, it was far more likely to be a misguided prank or something.
"Seth?" he called out through the door. There was no response. Seth was meant to still be upstairs anyway.
But if it wasn't Seth, then who? He wouldn't put it past Mzyra or another simself, but... what if it was Hideki? What if he was splitting Seth and Rodney up, so that he could take Seth out before returning for him? It was far too easy to imagine him silently climbing up the stairs...!
"Seth?! SETH!"
Then he heard the noise of footsteps on the upstairs landing and then descending down the stairs. They sounded like Seth's. "Rodney? Where are you, are you okay?"
He breathed a sigh of relief at the ostensible normalcy out there, but didn't enjoy the coming embarrassment. "I'm in the bathroom."
"Oh. Um, is everything alright?"
"I'm locked in. I can't open it."
Seth was quiet for a few seconds. "Have you tried the lock and everything?"
"I know how to open a door, Seth."
"Sorry. I can't see anything weird about it out here though, or any way to open it from the outside if it's locked. You want me to message Mzyra?"
Rodney balked. It might well be her who caused it. And he hated asking her for help with anything, slimy two-faced bitch. But if it was her, who else could get him out? "Fine."
Rodney heard the faint pressing of buttons for a while. "Okay, sent."
Rodney pulled a face in the mirror and resigned himself to having to see her again.
"Oh. Apparently it might be a while."
What a surprise. "Great."
Seth sounded troubled. "You know, I could probably knock the door down, if there's enough space for you to move out of the way. So long as it's not like magically protected, but I wouldn't be trying malevolently or anything, so it might work..." Rodney attempted to stare at him through the door. "Do you want me to try?"
"Calm down, you don't need to break the house."
Now he sounded puzzled. "Well no, it's just... If you were panicking because it's so small in there..."
Rodney looked around the room. Seth was right; it was scarcely bigger than a wardrobe. It wasn't a very comfortable space, but... why wasn't he panicking? "I'm not panicking. I'm okay." It was kind of weird.
"Oh. Well that's good. If you're okay to hang out and wait in there..."
"Yeah. Though there's not much to do in here..." Besides figure out where the hell his claustrophobia went.
"Want me to stay and keep you company?"
"If you don't mind."
Rodney could hear his warm smile, "You know I don't." He could also hear him sit down by the door. Rodney did the same, and looked up at the small space above and around him.
"I kind of like this."
"Being stuck in a bathroom?"
Rodney rolled his eyes. "Not when you put it like that. I can see everything. I guess I can state for a fact that he is definitely not in here with me. And if I can't get out and that means that he can't get in..." Replaced one fear with another, he supposed.
"Hm. I'm glad you feel safe. I only wish that I was in there with you."
Rodney wasn't sure he agreed, though he made a noise of agreement anyway. Besides even less space, they'd probably be halfway to sex by now. Which Rodney didn't generally complain about, but this was the now-strange freedom of having time to himself without all the fear that came with being alone. It was nice. "Just stay and keep watch for me."
Seth hummed in return, and Rodney could hear the sound of minute shuffling, and when he looked down he could just about see the tips of Seth's peach-y fingers poking through the small gap under the door. He leaned sideways against the door and rubbed them absent-mindedly with his own. Oh, Seth.
"I love you Rodney Jalowitz," he heard Seth murmur.
"I'd kiss you now if I could." It was the best truthful thing he could say to that. He could say he loved him back and he would mean it, but it probably wouldn't be equal to Seth's feelings.
"Save it up for later."
So they sat there and waited, holding- well, touching hands, and he peacefully listened to Seth humming some song through the door, feeling almost entirely safe in a room on his own for once. Life was almost good sometimes.
