I'm doing one of these again in an attempt to get back into the writing mood and my characters' heads. Let's hope it works.
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Huey's inherited his father and biological grandfather's body type; rather tall (over six foot) and not quite lanky, but relatively thin, though Huey is slightly more filled out than his predecessors.
2. How old is he?
Depends on where in the story, currently has to be in his early - mid thirties.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
Doesn't slouch, but is laid back so just walks comfortably and naturally.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Well, carrying and giving birth to quads certainly takes its toll. He does try to be healthy since he knows all about nutrition and stuff, but he's also very busy and can get so caught up in things that he doesn't take as good care of himself as he knows he should. He does work out a bit when he has the time, but is more on the cardiac stuff than muscle-building.
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Just comfortably, probably looking down at the ground, lost in thought.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
He knows he's far from a model in face or body, but he wouldn't want to be one, and being on the end of somebody else's sexual interest would just be weird, so he doesn't care; it's his body and it works well enough. He's not bad looking, has a nice smile and a pretty great personality, so doubtlessly some would find him attractive.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Light-ish, and there are some remnants of the fact that he was once a teenager, but pretty good.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Black, very long and generally tied back for convenience's sake, smooth and straight (though that may be aided by the weight of how long it is).
9. What color are his eyes?
Dark blue, the same shade as his great-great-grandmother's and all his ancestors' in that branch between.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
He has a rather distinctive nose, but so do a number of members of his family. He doesn't know whether to feel relieved or disappointed that he hasn't passed it on.
11. What are his chief tension centers?
Back from hunching over computers and stuff, upper arms from not doing enough with them while using computers, and lower back from the pregnancies and lugging around toddlers .
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Casual, comfortable and dark neutral colours, though he does like dressing like the qualified professor that he basically is. He doesn't want to have to think about his clothes, he has more important things to do. And you don't want to get baby/toddler puke on things you care about too much.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
Not as well as they used to since the pregnancies (and he's not bothered to shop for more), but they're mostly chosen to be comfortable so they're pretty much fine regardless.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
You have to wear protective clothing FOR SCIENCE! Though he can wear his ordinary stuff underneath.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
He's mostly gone by habit, so probably roughly whatever he was given as a kid with alterations only for personal comfort.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? and 2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
He speaks at a leisurely pace the vast majority of the time and pretty evenly, with the lack of excitement leaving his voice to be fairly smooth and deep.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any verbal tics?
Well, in comparison to some other sims, when he uses foreign words he will generally be able to actually say them in their original pronunciation and fluidly, rather than pushing his own accent on them.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
He got good grades in foreign languages at school and will have worked to learn any he's come across. Can also speak/use the sim equivalent of Latin for the scientific names of things and for sounding clever :3 He just likes to learn, so he picks up as much as he can.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
At times when he's been annoyed with Elliot he's used foreign languages against him because he knows Elliot will have no idea what he's said. He'd obviously speak to people with their own languages where he could, and using sim!Latin for scientific matters, etc...
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
He probably doesn't have to, but he will, just in case.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
Pretty eloquent, except when somebody's managed to really infuriate him (especially being wrong about something Huey knows), when he has so many thoughts he can't organise them enough to send them out of one mouth.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Very book-smart, naturally. Not very street-smart, but he'd logic his way through such stuff as best as possible.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
Again, may not really need to deliberate but will anyway, given the option.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Very logical, though given enough time he might analyse his intuitions enough to figure out whether they might be worth listening to. He'd call himself practical, but he's probably actually more idealistic than he'd realise.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
Ordinary state school, though the teachers were so happy to have such an eager student that he got more than he would have done otherwise, followed by university, which he did so well he's practically professor standard himself.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
He's a knowledge sim and he wants to know ALL THE THINGS. He probably has the most knowledge of any human about aliens (though that's not saying much), and has also studied astrophysics and biological science (human(oid)s).
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Introvert, though he has confidence speaking in seminars about his knowledge or whatever, but not so much socially.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Very even-tempered, though Elliot has cultivated ways to wind him up. Laid-back and kind of neutral on a positive/negative scale.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
A little wary of new people and would have to push himself to really interact. New situations are great if he has relevant knowledge or he can logic his way through, or even if it's new and he can simply study it, but if he's expected to interact...! (Nightmare scenario: speed-dating anywhere other than some kind of conference for scientists where he could talk science rather than anything else :P)
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
React.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Huey doesn't like fighting, so flight if that's the only remaining option. Elliot would fight for him anyway.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
He likes clever humour that plays with expectations or requires thinking, but ^those are either groan-worthy or childish (though pranks on Elliot are more amusing and totally less childish than pranks on anyone else :P)
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
Elliot would say so, but he functions perfectly well, even being introverted and lacking any sexual interest in people. Could probably do with more confidence in dealing with other people, but he would just hope that if he needs any better ability it might come with time.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
Watching his first documentary, his parents having more and more children and seemingly never enough, meeting Hideki, getting abducted, getting pregnant, having Dalton, finding out he was having quads, Dalton talking him 'round...
14. What does he fear?
Being a bad father, his kids being taken away to be tested on (also kids dying, etc), losing his mental functions, dying at this point in his life with 5 kids and things going so well, getting something really badly wrong in something published and everyone knowing and judging him...!
15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
That he can be a really good single dad and all his kids grow up happy, be the best scientist in his field and recognised as such, he and all his friends growing old together and still getting together as they look after their grandkids...
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
He knows he comes across as laid-back and comfortably confident in himself, and he mostly is, but sometimes he isn't and he'd rather people don't know that. Emotion isn't scientific (he's secretly a vulcan?). Also, he wishes even he didn't know about how he was after he found out about and had the quads, because all new parents are always completely overjoyed and wonderful, right...?
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
He loves them, he does, but he does resent that they just went ahead and had so many more kids without ever consulting on how the ones they already had were doing. His dad's embarrassingly protective and emotional sometimes and Huey's often rolling his eyes at him, but his mum's pretty sensible and pragmatic about things (as well as knowledgeable, what with her background) and he does respect that.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Too many siblings, some might say...
He's never been very close with any of his siblings really, though Lydia the most since she too is very knowledge-oriented, but Anna was more girly and relationship-obsessed, and Stern and the rest of his siblings were born after Huey had started school and was more or less lost to the world of learning. He'd do his duty as an older brother and look out for them, but besides Lydia, he never particularly clicked with any of them. Though now they're older and many have started having kids too, he does try to mingle his kids with nieces and nephews a bit and have that in common with his siblings. But still...
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
Yeeees: Elliot and Dwayne who are first cousins are among his best friends, though Elliot often drives him up the wall, and Dwayne sometimes defies all logical explanation (and isn't a vulcan at all). They're kind of more like his brothers than his actual siblings are.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
Brawly is the fourth musketeer and is at least sane and reliable, unlike Dwayne some of the time and Elliot nearly all of the time. Good for somebody else to roll his eyes at when Elliot's being ridiculous.
Juan kind of did more parenting to Huey than his actual parents once he was a child, and so he's a good role model to Huey, insofar as he has needed one.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Controversial. Probably Dwayne, because Elliot and Brawly had already become best friends by the time Huey started school, though he finds more in common with Brawly nowadays. Dwayne managed to winning-smile and puppy-dog-eyes his way (along with some help from Juan) into the rest of the guys' group, though technically they already knew each other as family.
6. Does he have other close friends?
He'll have some good colleagues at work and other scientists with whom he corresponds over research and stuff, and they can all geek out over their discoveries. He's far from lonely, except as the only living father of half-aliens in Simfield, but he tries not to let that alienate him from other parents.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
He's not argumentative, so it's not a struggle to get along so much as a struggle to interact full-stop, so not really.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
His friends are kind of a better family than his family (children notwithstanding) are.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Thoroughly single. There are probably female and men-interested-in-men scientists at his work and elsewhere in the world looking on with vaguely pining/adoring looks, but Huey's doing science and is lost to the world, besides being a little oblivious to the whole sexual culture of flirting and stuff anyway. Plus, if he did know, he'd probably be slightly terrified by the whole prospect.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
LOL, no.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
*insert joke about a string of DNA in a scientific magazine or something here*
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
Either intelligence or having an endless ability to listen to and be interested in the stuff Huey knows. Similar values. Preferably not having much of a sex drive themselves.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
Dalton, Madeline, Kirk, Tia and Tori, no grandkids yet, given that the kids are literally kids.
Given that Huey expected Dalton to be his one and only child and he was for a while, Huey's bonded with him very strongly and they're very much a team.
The quads are more difficult because there are too many directions to be looking in at once. He thinks he's got kind of the basics of their personalities and interests, but that'll probably only last so long. To be honest, none of them (even Dalton) seem to have much in common with Huey personally, but they're his kids and he's going to try, goddammit.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
He wishes he didn't (well, there's probably another scientist out there in the world doing similar research and it's a constant battle...!), but Hideki Tang certainly doesn't seem to like him much for the way he's gotten to be abducted by aliens while Hideki hasn't, but Huey understands why he feels that way and feels sorry for him really.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the
Kinsey scale?
Kinsey scale's not so good for this. But I did see recently more of a graph with four segments where one axis was heterosexual attraction and the other was homosexual attraction, so high amounts of both was bisexual, one high one low was heterosexual/homosexual, and low of both was asexual, where dear Huey lies. He can kind of figure the logical appeal of certain partners for the stimulation of one's erogenous zones, but when it comes down to it? Not really. They're going to have to be someone pretty darn special to win him over.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
He has more important things to do. He's a bit uncomfortable about it, but probably only because of how big a deal is made about it (especially by Elliot) so it worries him more than it should. It's a thing that other people do, but he doesn't much feel like it, and the social rigamarole around it all makes it far from worth the effort.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Being up to speed on his knowledge specialities and being clever is always good, or at least being patient about how crazily knowledgeable and geeky he is, as well as his not being particularly interested in fornication. Trying to persuade him into said fornication and/or implying you know his body and desires better than he does is a definite turn off, as well as being dismissive of his interests and knowledge (if he and Elliot weren't first cousins anyway, they would have minus a million bolts of chemistry).
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
Virgo, though a mean one, though that mostly manifests by not taking much crap. Well, err, he certainly represents the 'virgin' aspect?
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
He's the kind of scientists who would struggle to mix in religion without more proof. SCIENCE. Though, to be honest, he would like there to be more than just living and death because there's so much good in his life that he doesn't just want to end without meaning eventually.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
No scientific testing on kids after he had his, that's for sure, unless the kids are cool with it and it's very minor. He tries to be a good guy, though probably so do most people. Understanding (that's a big one) and tolerance.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Depends how they treat his different beliefs - if they're dismissive of him he's going to be dismissive of them. But he can't help being curious, it's part of who he is.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
Only fairly typical social ones, based on clothes and stuff. Particularly ones that might imply a man/woman is particularly looking for sex - move awaaaaaaay (if/when he has sex it's going to be something of an experiment and he'd rather be with someone he trusts, not someone he doesn't/barely knows).
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Comfortable towards rich thanks to his mother's saved money, though with such a large family before, the cash leftover once the house was bought was running low before Huey started bringing in an income.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
Middle-ish class, as are most Simfielders. No change due to never really having left the sphere he was born into after returning home after uni.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
Pretty large house, but it'll probably never feel like his castle since it was his parents' first and they're still around at the minute anyway.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
Treats for the kids now and then - sure, you can't buy your children's love, but you can show you were thinking of them while you had to work? Also SCIENCE, including scientific journal subscriptions.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
SCIENCE, yes, yes, oh god yes are you implying there's something better than science?! Well, he feels that he ought to spend more time with his kids, but doesn't every parent?
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
SCIENCE, learning of any kind really, hanging out with his friends and their kids too.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
Luckily, even when heavily engaged in research or the like, there are still enough adults in the house that somebody responsible will cook a good meal, and even shove it under his face if they have to, though he tries to make mealtimes with the kids now.
