Continuing with the opera theme I seem to be rolling with today (unintentional, but it keeps coming up!), I have an ecstatic recommendation for my fellow fans of lyric sopranos performing Baroque arias:
Amazon made me aware of this latest album by Simone Kermes only yesterday. I was previously unfamiliar with this singer, and I admit the initial draw for me was the promise of the beautiful cover photo. Happily the content of the album proved to more than live up to that promise--Ms. Kermes has an absolutely glorious voice! I'd say track 3, 'Ondeggiante Agitato', is a prime example of this. Oh my goodness. That is a trill to be reckoned with!
The Amazon listing doesn't afford much information about the music on this album (I'm stuck with a download from eMusic until I have the funds for a physical copy), but the arias all appear to be by early Italian Baroque composers. Given the content and the style of performance, I'd recommend this album especially to anyone who enjoyed Patricia Petibone's most recent album Rosso: Italian Baroque Arias, or any of Cecilia Bartoli's Vivaldi recordings.
