It’s snowing for my first time this winter. Although I completely understand the dreadful energy loss that I’m causing by keeping the shutters up in order to occasionally look outside and squee fangirlishly so at the pretty white, I refuse to roll them down!
I went out last night-this from anyone else in my RL would mean for drinks and/or clubbing. Coffee, dinner and then for Trivial Pursuit at a stay-open till 3 a.m. boardgames cafeteria. My friend and I spoke long about our separate trips to the UK.
I want to go back and experience living there, not just doing the tourist stuff. According to plan I’ll do my master’s/graduate degree in the UK. It seems lately that the UK is becoming more and more like my Fountain of Youth (and what can be worse that idealizing an imperialistic heritage). But then again I’m not much of a conquistador.
Now, some movies I've watched recently.
ShakespeaRe-Told’s The Taming of the Shrew. I loved it. It’s my new comfort movie and therefore I can’t give a proper criticism. Still it was a wonderful interpretation of the taming that happened to both of them Little Prince style and what ought to have been a situation of perfect trust and belief in each other. I wrote an enormous rant because I thought there were still sides left unexplored which might turn into fanfiction or a book or just remain an enormous brainstorm. I then decided I’m keeping it to myself until I actually read the play. Before Re-Told I only knew the Zeffirelli version with Burton and Taylor. I want to believe that the Bard had more to give to the relationship of Petruchio and Katherine than the chauvinistic side because dammit he’s the BARD and he shouldn’t have written a play as revenge to womankind. I am reminded of a discussion I had with my best friend. It went something like that.
Her: Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Me: And when a man is scorned or otherwise mad at a woman, he will immortalize her in literature and/or song as a bitch.

I read this Persuasion fanfic www.fanfiction.net/s/3509787/1/Nobody_Screws_Up_a_Second_Shot It’s not bad and the equivalent of the Captain somebody character who’s name in the Jane Austen book I can’t remember because I haven’t actually read it (shocking I know) is a writer, and when the girl who’s name in the book I can’t remember broke off their engagement (is this getting confusing?) he wrote a book about how the bitch broke his heart. It sort of proves my point. BTW, apart from the lack of plot the fanfic is annoying in terms of spelling. The author is pretty damn popular, why won’t she bloody get herself a beta?!?!
And back to movies.
I watched the new Brideshead Revisited and The Atonement back-to-back. Again nothing constructive to say about them. Pretty movies, loved Keira’s dress, wished I could pull it off in a less-skinny-and-but-still-hot way, drooled over Oxford and the Venetian carnivale.
I am miffed by Ryder’s conversion to theism. I understand the point of religion, I understand the reasons behind human desire for religion but I am still miffed. Also, because I’ve seen Fry’s Bright Young Things again based on a novel by Evelyn Waugh I caught the pattern of men buying off women from their husbands. And I thought that Sebastian Flyte was more of a central character. Why don’t we find out what happened to him?
So the fictional novel of Atonement was in fact a RL fanfiction involving Briony’s sister and sister’s lover? Okay so the movie was sad but I was actually cheered by that fact. Also, I think that the directional tricks of rewinding and making the soundtrack a part of the scenes made it artificial and took away the realness of the situations. Which is funny because I only noticed those tricks at the bits of the movie meant to be true to Briony’s past and present.
Finally, the Curious Tale of Benjamin Button. Why is it that the only thing stuck with me is how Brad Pitt looked gold-skinned, aviator shades and white t-shirt on, beautiful, magnificent riding a motorcycle? Apart from that the movie made me cry. And it wasn’t just Brad Pitt’s accent.
And a meme because it is a unit of information that propagates and mutates like a gene!!
