Plainview enjoys home opener by sweeping Paron

PLAINVIEW - A third-quarter spurt proved to be the difference as the Plainview-Rover Panthers won their home opener, 49-38, over visiting Paron on Thursday night.
Trailing 20-19 at the half, the Panthers’ defense stepped up and Derek Bollan had the hot hand, scoring 11 points in a 4:11 span to erase the one-point deficit and turned it into a 30-22 lead. Tthe Panthers never trailed again.
“I thought in the first half, we thought we could just step out on the floor and win, but we aren’t talented enough to do that. We have to work hard every game,” Plainview coach Brad Harrison said. “I fired them up at halftime, and we really stepped it up on defense.
“I thought (point guard) Spencer Gay did a good job on their point guard (Cory Cobb). I told him at the half to pick him up where he thought he could play him, and he picked him up on the other end of the floor.”
He was also pleased with Bollan’s offensive outburst in the third.
“Spencer led the defense, and Derek showed senior leadership on the offensive end,” Harrison said. “He put us on his back and carried us.”
Bollan led all scorers with 19 points.
Plainview held a slim 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter before the Lions outscored the Panthers 12-9 in the second quarter to take a 20-19 lead at the half.
Plainview outscored Paron 17-6 in the pivotal third quarter to take its 34-26 lead. The Lions scored the first five points of the fourth to cut the lead to 34-31, but that would be as close as the visitors would get as the Panthers pulled away for the win.
Gay was second in scoring or Plainview (2-0) with nine points. David Baker and Corey Lawerence had six each with Rene Jandres adding two.
Lady Panthers 54,
Lady Lions 41
Plainview-Rover coach Richard Deering gave his team an ultimatum at halftime trailing 23-19, and it worked.
Deering told his team that they were either going to run in the second half and win the game or run at practice the next day.
They chose the former.
Led by junior point guard Krista Goss, who scored 24 of her game-high 34 points in the second half, the Lady Panthers put away the Lady Lions.
Paron’s Brittneys gave the Lady Lions a strong start. Guards Brittney Hance and Brittney Quire scored most of the points for Paron in the first half, including three treys from Quire in the first quarter as they led 13-9 at the end of the first and 23-19 at the half.
Goss would change all that in the third quarter as she scored 13 of her team’s 17 points in the third to lead the charge.
“Krista is a hard-worker,” Dearing said. “She took control of the game on offense and defense and she pushed the tempo up.”
Plainview (2-1) led 36-32 at the end of the third and finished off the game by outscoring their oponent 18-9 in the final period to win the game.
Junior Panthers 51, Junior Lions 39
Plainview broke open a close game in the third quarter, outscoring Paron 18-5 to take a comfortable 19-point lead into the final quarter.
The Junior Lions led 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, but Plainview took a 26-20 halftime lead. The Junior Panthers then led 44-25 at the end of the third before settling for the 51-39 victory.
Brent Montgomery scored 24 points and Mario Javelera added 18 to lead Plainview.
