Plainview wins basketball opener
SCRANTON - Plainview’s senior boys took the lead with a 17-8 run in the third quarter, then held off Scranton to post a 48-46 victory in the basketball season opener for both teams Tuesday night.
Scranton led 26-25 at halftime, but Plainview used its outburst to take a 42-34 lead into the final eight minutes of play. The Panthers, however, needed a late free throw and a defensive stand in the closing seconds to put the game away.
Derek Bollan had 16 points and Spencer Gay 11 to lead Plainview. Cory Bauer and Nathan Moody paced Scranton with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
In senior girls action, Scranton jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the opening period and went on to take a 46-32 victory over Plainview in a game that matched new coaches - Richard Deering of Plainview and Michael Gotcher of Scranton - against each other.
Scranton went on to post leads of 25-11 at halftime and 40-20 through three periods before Plainview made the final score more respectable.
Krista Goss had 18 points and was the only Lady Panther in double figures, while Andrea Agnew added seven for Plainview.
Plainview returns to action tonight with its home opener, hosting Paron in a trio of games, starting with the junior boys at 5:30 p.m.
