I came up with an idea to sort of introduce potential readers of this story/series to the characters, setting, and the basic idea of the story so that people know what to expect ( Read more... )

setting, main characters, terms

Can I ask for a clarification?

Human vs. what, precisely? What are these elders, exactly? Are they not fully biologically human any more, or just not seen as being entirely human, because of their powers (which, by the by, are a wee bit vague, from the descriptions here. Are they more like nature-based elemental mages who derive their power from a natural energy found within nature, like in elements; are they wizards whose powers come from things like spells/incantations and combinations of gestures/rituals; or what, exactly, are they?) They sound vaguely druidic (or like half-elves or something) to me, from the sound of this hidden forest village . . .

o.o I think you misunderstood. I was just telling their species for the sake of being specific 'n stuff. They're human. They could be Elves or something if I wanted, but they're definitely human. Sorry if it confused you.

S'okay. I was reading kinda fast, in between other stuff, trying to cram everything in before I had to go. I wasn't sure if I'd just missed something or if you were implying that the people with powers aren't quite entirely human anymore. Which, you know, people do a lot, so much that I'm fairly sure I like this way better. So . . . what kind of range of powers are we talking about here, broadly speaking, or is that something that's still in development?

Powers for...who? The Elders, or Azura? Neither really have any awesome powers. They just...they have magic abilities, but I haven't specified any abilities that the Elders have, and I haven't given Azura any great powers because, one, it's cliche for the main character to have these awesome powers, and, two, I don't really know a lot about magic, so I haven't given Azura any major powers.

Powers for either one. Just, you know, how much can they do? Are there specific things that they usually can/cannot do, and does it have to do with natural, inborn ability, or is it just something that's learned and can be mastered by anyone, given enough time/effort? Are they generally limited to being able to affect smaller and more natural things after, say, much studying/effort (in other words, is it more of a mystical/spiritual thing than any actual flashy powers, though of course there can be specific and very visible powers, like with, say, the Jedi); do they have influence associated with certain processes or items or beings (as is the case sometimes with more nature-based, elemental magic); etc. Or is this something you're still working out? I understand wanting to stay away from fantasy cliches, but it can be easier to stay away from things that have been done, already, or from sounding too much like certain other established practices if you map out specifically who/what your people are and where and why their limits are at ( ... )

Umm...I haven't actually thought about all that (yet) because, as I've said, I don't know much about magic, so I haven't gone into detail about all of those things. I suppose those are things that I could figure out and research when I go to rewrite it, but for now I'm trying to stay away from dealing with any of that stuff, which is what I tried telling you above. o.o You make a good point and those are things I need to -eventually- consider, but for now...o.o just read the story? I think you might understand why I haven't done much with magic in it once you read a couple of chapters.

Okay. I'll just hush now and get to the reading. Honest. *Smiles sheepishly*

Uhm, this is off topic, but did you tell me you can open WordPerfect files if they're sent to you as attachments? I write in a WordPerfect file, myself . . .

No, I didn't tell you that. I tried opening the file you sent me and it wouldn't work. Of course, I was on my laptop and didn't bother trying on my Mac (I think it'd work there?). Word is the best way for it to be sent, or Notepad/Wordpad. Or just regular email or through an LJ post.

I wanted to send it as an attachment because it would keep its formattting. Things look weird to me sometimes even with the italics and whatnot added in up on the lj. I don't know if it's just because I'm not used to it, or what.

I'm behind on my email. I should probably be reading your most recent comment instead of responding to this one. If what I tried last didn't work, I'll try again after saving to WordPad.
