More Buffy!

Dave and I watched this episode at the same time, while chatting about it on Gmail. So fun! I recommend this, it's like watching TV with someone, but no one will ever talk over the dialogue!

Spoilers through 'Seein' Red,' which is the last episode on disc 5. )

Oh, be prepared for some kickass carnage. The last ep of season six usually makes me cry.

Yeah, one of the best things about that show is that almost everybody kicks ass -- especially the females!

I was quite disappointed in Xander, though. Still am.

I'm a nerd and I sometimes read academic articles on Buffy. I read one very persuasive one that suggests that Xander is a sort of modern everyman faced with the anxiety of masculinity in the face of feminism's "successes". He's not badass and tough and strong, he's pretty much exactly like a regular guy, and I for one think he does a great job of learning to love and support the women in his life despite all the mistakes and things he makes. He shows that men can adjust to being upstaged by strong women. It would have been completely out of character for him to be perfect or overly attractive or suave or strong and tough, and I like that he made mistakes all over the place. It makes him one of the most human characters on the show.

Also, his entire character is entirely vindicated by the line he says to Dawn in Season 7, which I won't post for fear of spoiling Jackie :)
