I'm not sure how you're using chemistry here--generally chemistry (from an audience perspective) refers to how much the audience feels like the characters should be together. When I watch Xander and Anya, I don't think, "hey, wow, they're meant for eachother!" but a number of scenes have convinced me that what the characters feel for one another is genuine enough. It's not simply a convenient relationship, and I don't think it's purely based on sex.

I guess you're right. I did mean it "chemistry from the perspective of the characters themselves." I'm still not entirely convinced that Xander is in love with Anya? He thinks she's cute in her demon-ignorant-of-the-world-of-humans way, and attractive, and practical. I still think he might be in love with Buffy, though? Not sure.

ANYWAY. Yes, there is more to their relationship than sex, but I'm leaning towards convenience over true love. This might just be me! It probably is.
