I took a bunch of pictures at the Bettie Serveert concert tonight. I'll upload them later to my Flickr account. EDIT: okay I didn't take as many as I thought I did, only 23. Also a lot of them came out blurry >:/ but in my defense, my camera's kind of old. Son of Edit: Horribly blurry pictures
here. Honestly, I have no idea why all my photos are coming out blurry lately. Maybe it has to do with the zoom feature :/ Second Cousin Twice Removed of Edit: Okay, I've resized the pics on my computer so they're not as blurry, but I can't figure out how to delete pics on my Flickr so I can upload the revised ones instead. :p
SO ANYWAY.
I went to Powell's* in the afternoon, before the show, and I got done earlier than I thought I would so I just decided to walk the eight or so blocks back to Dante's and just wait until I could get in. Luckily there were tables outside so I didn't have to stand. I talked a little bit to this guy outside the venue, and Herman from the Betties was at the table adjacent to me, but I was too nervous to say anything :( And I saw Carol van Dyk twice, but both times she had her back to me and went back inside before I could say anything. BUT the third time she came out she was facing me, and she looked at me and said "...Are you Zanny?" And I was like "Yes, how did you know?!" and she said (paraphrased): "I recognised you from emails [MySpace actually]! I'm Carol," and we shook hands. (I love how she told me who she was, it was friggin' adorable :D) "And yes, we are playing Palomine, it's the first song." I did squeefists and was like "Yes!" (which she did too and it was, again, adorable) and said "You must have seen my Facebook thingy," (i.e. status update in which I linked to a live performance of Palomine and tagged the Betties and said "I hope they play this") Carol: "Yeah, we check them every morning, we've gotten a lot of requests" (<--paraphrased) And then I think she said something like "Do you have a ticket already?" Me: "Oh yeah, I have one." And then I think she asked if they were letting people in yet (not sure about this) and I said I didn't know, I hadn't heard them say anything. She said I could probably just go in if I wanted, "Just say you're with the band." I didn't think they'd believe me, so I declined. I did venture inside once or twice but the soundchecks the opening band were doing were pretty loud so I had to go back out. So anyway she was talking to the rest of the band after that and I didn't really want to interrupt so I read a little bit until it was actually time to go in. I did hear Carol mention my name to one of the other band members while I was reading. While I was figuring out where I wanted to sit inside, Carol came up to me and asked me how to spell my last name, so I spelled it for her and she said "You're on the guest list" and I'm like "Awesomeness :D" Unfortunately that was the last exchange I had with her, I think. I totally neglected to get a picture with her, though, because I'm a loser :p, and I didn't get the opportunity to talk with her after the show (I'm not sure but I think they had to leave almost immediately. Joppe, the drummer, was selling merch--I bought the Log 22 spiral T-shirt--but I never did see Carol again after she got off stage. And I had a drawing with me that I wanted to give her, too, but I forgot :( ) Oh! And I forgot to mention that when I was talking to her outside she said "I hope you enjoy the show!" to which I replied like the superdork I am, "I'm pretty sure I will :D" (Can't remember at what point we had that little exchange though)
So anyway, the show. The opening band, Charming Birds, was all right I guess. I didn't really like the lead guy's voice (too "heavy metal raspy" sounding, if you get what I mean). And I'd never heard of them before so I didn't know any of their songs.
Here's the Betties' setlist, which I wrote down:
Palomine (fuck yeah :D )
Love Lee
Don't Touch That Dial
Deny All
Log 22
Private Suit
The Pharmacy
Semaphore
"I have no fucking clue ??? I have heard this song and it's driving me crazy" (note: I think this was a cover song but I can't think of the original artist or what it was called) EDIT: okay I just got a message from the Betties on Facebook and they said this was called "Retreat".
Tomboy
White Dogs intro/"another mystery song" EDIT: okay a few people have told me this one is called "Receiver".
Calling
ENCORE
Kid's Allright (Carol said "We're allowed to do one more song" and then she said something else that I forget.)
Anyway it was fucking awesome, my only gripe is that it was too short. It would probably have been longer had Sinferno Cabaret not been the same night, at 11 pm (the Betties started at around 9:15 or so and got done at... around 10:30? So a pretty short concert, at least shorter than ones I usually see. The New Pornographers back in July played for like two hours or so, I think).
Also I neglected to actually eat anything for dinner :( and I STILL haven't eaten dinner yet, although I had some cereal earlier and a scone from Powell's.
*Oh btw I bought three books at Powell's: Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones (because I LOVE the movie), Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life (Volume 1), and I haven't seen the movie for that yet but I want to, and The Witch Of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare because I am totally nine years old. (I remember having to read that book in fifth grade. Except, I didn't think I would like it so I never actually read it 9_9...)
Edited for what seems like the fiftieth time to add a few more details I'd forgotten about.
