“Owen, wait up!”
Owen looked over his shoulder, looking to see his mate Andy running up to join him, “Well, come on, move your arse and stop dragging your feet,” He said, his backpack slung over one shoulder, his blazer hanging slightly lopsided from the weight on one shoulder. “I’m starving and it’s lunchtime.”
“You’re always starving,” Andy said, adjusting his glasses before falling into step with the taller teen. “Did you hear about the new girl?”
“Tosh and Tommy were talking about her in grammar,” Owen nodded. “She’s from America, isn’t she?”
“You haven’t heard? She’s Harkness’s oldest kid.” Andy looked at Owen like he’d grown a third eye.
“You mean Jack and Ianto Harkness? The Founders of the Torchwood Institute? They’re back in Cardiff?” His dad worked the Institute, how come he hadn’t heard about this?
“Yeah, their contract in America just ended a few weeks ago, I think one of the parents came with the kids to get them set up and start getting the house ready, but the other one is finishing up stuff in America.” Andy said, “Oh there she is.”
The girl he pointed out as they walked into the lunch room was a tiny thing. The top layer of her hair was a yellowish orange, and the under layer was red and black alternating stripes. She was picking at her lunch, sitting alone in the corner of the lunchroom, ignoring those around her. She definitely looked like the kind of girl the rest of the school would stay away from. Which made him all the more intrigued. He glanced over when he heard his and Andy’s name. “Hey Tosh,” he said absently. He nodded at Tommy.
“Hey, see you’ve spotted the new girl,” she said. “Some of the other girls said she’s got a bad attitude and is just as likely to bite your head off as to say hello.”
“Well, she and Harper should hit it off just fine then,” Tommy said with a laugh.
“Oh, you’re just saying that because you know she wouldn’t go for your caveman tactics, unlike others.” Owen said, still bitter that Tommy was with the girl he’d been crushing on since he was twelve, and had known since he’d moved to Cardiff with his dad and stepfamily.
“Owen!” Tosh admonished, sighing slightly. “Can’t you two be civil just once?”
Tommy sneered, “Ha, doubtful Harper has a single civil bone in his body.”
“And I doubt you could even spell Civility, Brockles.” Owen snapped, looking at his partner in crime who nodded and shrugged. Andy looked more uncomfortable and like he’d rather be anywhere else, but he didn’t like Tommy anymore than Owen did, if only because Tommy had a tendency to pick on both boys because they were slightly smaller and younger than he was, him being the big Jr and they were only sophomores.
“Are you two quite finished? Or do you need the measuring tape to see who actually won the my dick is bigger than yours contest?” The four looked over to see the new girl looking at them with a bit of a glare. “Because I’m sure I have one in my bag, or we could go to the maths classroom and use a ruler, though that might be a bit long for the both of you.”
Both Tommy and Owen looked furious. “Who the hell do you think you are?” Tommy finally said as Owen sputtered over his own anger.
“Me? Oh I’m just the girl whose lunch you are disturbing. The one who’s tired of being gawked at, stared at, and talked about but never to.” She shook her head and tsked. “And you lot say Americans have no manners.” She waited to see if she got any other answer. “Well, at least two of you have the decency to look embarrassed.” She noted Tosh and Andy both looking not only uncomfortable but turning a bit pink around the ears. “If you two would like to join me you can,” She glared at Owen and Tommy, “They are not invited.”
Andy looked torn between sticking by Owen and going over to sit with the new girl, Owen just gave him a shrug. “Do what you want, I aint’ stopping ya. Promised to have lunch with Gwen and Rhys anyways.” He noticed his stepsister and her boyfriend and walked over, hoping the others didn’t noticed the little surprised look on Gwen’s face as he slid in beside her. She covered quickly, acting like it was the plan all along.
Tommy sighed, “Go on, I got an exam to study for, I’ll grab a later lunch, yeah? See you at practise?”
“I’m always there, aren’t I?” Tosh said with a smile, watching as Tommy walked off to the library, before she and Andy moved to sit. “Sorry about that. They’re actually both kinda sweet once you get to know them.” Lacey raised an eyebrow, but said nothing, continuing to eat and read her book. “I’m Toshiko Sato. This is Andy Davidson.” The boy waved. “What about you?”
“Harkness.” She said, around a bite of apple. “Lacey Harkness. What’s the deal with those two?”
“Oh, Owen and Tommy have been like that ever since Tosh started dating Tommy.” Andy said with a shrug, before looking at Tosh. “Think that’s why Owen didn’t sign up for the baseball team this year?”
“If it’s anything like the drama my friends back in the States complain about, then yes. Sounds like your friend has a case of the jealous.” Lacey said with a shrug. “So, what’s there to do in Cardiff for fun?”
Tosh and Andy spent the rest of lunch talking about what to do around the city, where to avoid, and what kind of activities there were for students at the school. Lacey in turned, talked about the places she’d seen in America. She talked about her three best friends she’d known, and how much she missed them, but they were coming to visit during the winter break. By the end of lunch, the three were comparing class schedules. “Looks like I’ll see you in drama, not” Lacey said, looking over at Owen who was trying to hide the fact that he was watching them, “like we haven’t had enough already.”
Tosh nodded. “You’ll like Professor Hart. He’s a bit out there, and he’s a big flirt.”
Lacey paused, “He’s not John Hart, is he?”
“You know him?”
She gave a little smile that said she knew more than she was letting on. “yeah, you could say that.” Maybe this school wouldn’t be so bad...even if the mascot was the Weevil.
