Characters: Jack Harkness, Lacey Harkness
Summary: Jack and Lacey have a heart to heart about Home schooling, homework, and moving to Cardiff.
Notes: This is an AU. Jack and Ianto are happily married normal human adult males who work for the Torchwood institute. When Lacey was a baby, they moved to the United States to set up and train an American branch. Now that Lacey is fifteen, it's time to move back to Cardiff, where she'll start high school. The rest of the characters, with the exception of a few, will be students. The few exceptions will most likely be professors. this is different from the Second Chance verse. No I don't know if Aliens exist in this setting or not. Written for the
hs_bingo prompt: Home Schooling.
“Lacey?” Jack called out, looking at the unfinished science homework sitting at the kitchen table. He sighed. “Lacey, have you finished your homework?”
“Dad, it’s a Saturday, I don’t want to do homework today,” she said. He followed the whining teen to the back porch where she sat in the swing, looking a bit sulky. “Why do I have to do work on a Saturday? Betty and Maggie and Max are all out of town for the weekend going white water rafting and I’m stuck here cause you assigned work.”
“Ok, one, you were grounded, so you wouldn’t have gone on that trip in the first place,” he pointed out, “and two, since when did you hate doing homework? You used to love it.” She looked away, over the water of the lake behind the house. Jack liked the house well enough when he and Ianto moved here when Lacey was just a baby; it reminded him a bit of Cardiff and the bay. She was pushing herself idly on the swing. “Sweetie?”
“All I hear from my friends is how much they are enjoying high school, and all the great activities they get to do, football games, homecoming, winter dances, and I’m here. Doing homework from a school system in a different country.”
“Lacey, we explained to you why you and the twins are homeschooled.” He sighed, they’d been over this a dozen times, but it was easier with the eight year olds than the fourteen year old. “Our contracts here aren’t up until after the school year started, and the American and English school systems are completely different. We thought this way would be easier on you three.”
“Well, maybe I don’t want to go back to Cardiff? Did you think of that?”
“Lacey…”
“Dad, the last time I was there, I was in diapers, I don’t even remember Cardiff!” She crossed her arms, sulking on the swing. “All my friends are here, my memories are here. Why do I have to go back to a place I only know about because you and Tad talk about it?”
“Because your Tad and I got transferred back. You know we were only here temporarily…”
“Temporarily to help the American Government set up their own branch of the Torchwood Institute.” She sighed. “And now that you feel that they’ve got it under control, it’s back to Cardiff to Torchwood HQ.”
“I know this isn’t easy on you, honey,” Jack said, putting his arm around his daughter, “On any of your kids, really, but it’s our job, and now it’s time to return home.”
“Cardiff will never be home,” Lacey insisted.
Jack decided it was best to let that subject dropped. She might have gotten her looks from Ianto, but she was all his when it came to attitude, and she could be as stubborn if not more so than he could. “Then we’ll at least make sure you’re ready for your first day of school. Science homework.”
She sighed getting up from the swing and following her father into the kitchen, where her work was spread out. “I suppose you’re about to assign more work for me?”
“We’ll see,” he said, sitting across from here. “All right, so what did Ianto assign you this week?”
“Geology,” She said, showing her father the worksheet. “I have to label and explain each type of rock, and label the layers of the earth from core to surface.”
“Doesn’t sound too hard, especially for you, little miss Pi to Thirty places,” He nudged her, and she gave him a small smile, “So why weren’t you doing it?”
“Because I want to be white water rafting.”
“Well, you’re not, you’re doing your Geology homework, and don’t you have an essay on the Roman Occupation of England to write as well?”
“Oh yes, the Invasion of the Hot Italians,” she muttered, rolling her eyes. “Why do I even do this work? Do you like, send it in or something?”
“Email it actually to the correspondence professors, he grades it, and puts in your records so you’ll be nice and caught up when we finally hop across the pond.” He said, looking over the start of her essay. “You cannot title your work the Invasion of the Hot Italians, Lace. Where did you even pick that up from?”
“Scottish Penpal. It’s her favorite point in history,” she shrugged. “It’s fitting.”
“Yes, but try to find a more dignified paper or I won’t submit it for a grade,” Jack said, handing the paper back to her. He chuckled as she rolled her eyes, pen stuck between her teeth as she looked up the different rocks in her geology text. “I’m grilling tonight.”
She paused, looking up at him. “Steaks?” She asked hopefully.
He nodded. “If you get all your homework done before Ianto and the twins get back, I’ll let you help.” He winked. “We can count it as Home Ec homework.”
She grinned, working on the assignment with the speed and thoroughness he remembered her having before they decided to homeschool the kids. He grinned, going to call Ianto and ask him to add a few more items to shopping list.
