“I'm going to get you Harper!” Lacey laughed, climbing after the boy, wearing her pink dress again. She was wearing jeans and pink trainers underneath it.

“Not bloody likely, Harkness!” He called down to her, adjusting the wolf hood and crown with a smirk.

“Hey!” They both paused, hanging onto branches of the tree when Jack called to them. “We're heading back to the Hub. Try not to break your necks.”

“Kay!” they answered in unison, Jack shutting the kitchen door with a chuckle. The two kids were off in their own little world, barely noticing the two adults leaving. Lacey reached up and grabbed Owen's foot. “Tag!”

“OI! That's cheating, you were using Jack leaving as an excuse to get me.” He gave her the five second head start before climbing down and around the tree after her with a laugh.

They'd been playing for fifteen minutes when Owen stopped, Lacey crashing into him with an oof as they raced to the next tree. “Ow, Owen, what gives?”

“It's your damn horse, look,” He pointed to wear Lickity Split was. She was stomping around the garden, nostrils flaring. “What the hell spooked her?”

Lacey shrugged. “I dunno, she's never acted like this...Owen, what do you think you're doing?” She watched as the boy started to approach the horse. “Owen I don't know if that's a good idea.”

“Shhh, just stay quiet,” he whispered over his shoulder, “I know what I'm doing.” He looked back at the horse, hands up in a calming manner. “Shhh, it's ok, come on, girl.” He moved one step at at time, each move deliberate. Lacey chewed on her lip, hoping that Owen actually did know what he was doing, and not bluffing his way through this. Lickity Split seemed to be calming as he approached her, even allowing him to pet her in a soothing way once he got close enough. He looked back at Lacey with a grin when a peal of thunder rang out behind them. Both girl and horse started, but the horse went into a full panic. She reared back, one hoof catching Owen in the arm. He fell back with a cry, quickly rolling before she could bring her hooves down on him.

Lacey watched her pet freak out and run, barreling down a section of the fence that was weak, before moving to Owen's side. He was laying on his back, eyes squeezed shut holding his injured arm to his chest. She knelt next to him. “Broken?”

He nodded. “Bloody hell, that hurt.” He pushed himself up with his good arm, wincing.

“You know, I remember a time when you were so happy to be feeling pain,” she chuckled at his glare, “let me see it.”

“Right, because you have medical training.”

She sighed, “Yes. Everyone in the War knew your basic first aid, including how to set broken bones and splint them. Then we should go get Martha for a proper cast.”

He looked at her. She never talked about the Time War, and he certainly didn't expect her to bring it up while they were this bleeding vulnerable. Then he shook his head, “No, I don't want to see Martha. Not right now.” Doctors asked too many questions, he hated them as a kid, hated what he had to say to keep from getting worse once he was healed. “We should go get that horse of yours. She might be injured from crashing through the fence.”

Lacey nodded. “All right, but I'm still going to splint this. Take your jacket off so I can get to it.” She went inside, coming out a few minutes later carrying some things. She set them down by Owen's hip, and reached out for his arm. She felt for where the break was. “Feels like a clean break, that's good. This is going to hurt.”

“Just get it over with, yeah?” He braced himself as well as he could, but couldn't help the strangled scream as she aligned the bones, his fingers of his good hand digging at the ground. He watched her as she braced it with a splint, using a tensor to hold it in place. He took the painkillers she handed him, swallowing them with a face. “Couldn't have brought water, could you?” He shook his head, but gave her a weak smile. “thanks.”

“Hey, consider it payment for all the times you've patched me up.” She stood up, pulling him up by his good arm. “I left Uncle Gray a note in case we aren't back by the time he's done at the diner. She helped him put the Jacket back on, and they walked off in the direction her horse had run off in.

Another Thunderclap had Lacey jumping nearly onto Owen's back. He groaned in pain as she gave him a sheepish smile. “I'll live,” he told her, seeing her look, “look, if you want to wait back at the manor, I can bring her home myself.” She shook her head. “All right, all right, but do you think you can keep from leaping all over me?” She shrugged. “God, I never thought I'd say this, but I miss the Lacey that never shut up.”

“I never really talked as a kid,” she said finally, “never really anyone to talk to. Theta was always running off, and Koschei was cool and all, but I don't know, it's hard to talk to adults. There was Romana, but we really only saw each other at the academy until we were older.”

“Well, you got me and Tess this time around,” he said, giving her a little sidelong hug, but he understood what she meant. He hadn't had many friends as kid, not until he was older. It got too awkward trying to explain why they couldn't come over, or the bruises and broken bones. The wind was starting to pick up, and the first drops of rain were falling. Owen looked up at the darkening sky, jumping a bit himself when a bolt of lightening streaked across the sky. He turned to Lacey. “Maybe we should head back. I'm sure Lickity Split will find her way home.”

“Yeah, might not be a bad idea,” she said, turning around to look back the way they came. She was turning around when another flash of lightening filled the sky with a crash as it struck a nearby tree. “Owen, look out.” She pushed her friend out of the way, screaming as she realized she wasn't fast enough to get out from under it.

“Lacey!” He scrambled to his feet, wincing as he put too much pressure on the arm. She was face down, mostly out from under the tree, but her legs were pinned. “Lacey, talk to me.”

“Ow.”

He sighed in relief, she was conscious. He looked at the branch that had her pinned. He thought he could lift it. “I'm going to try to lift this up. You're gonna have to move fast.” She nodded. He put his good shoulder under the branch. “Ready?” She nodded again, and he put all his weight into moving the branch. It was heavier than he thought, or he was still thinking in his adult weight. They'd only been small for just over a week, sometimes they both slipped and tried to do something that they could before the accident. He was able to lift it enough that she could wiggle out from under it if she tried. “Lacey go!” He grunted.

She'd managed to crawl out, whimpering each time she had to move her left leg. She rolled onto her back with a cry, sitting up to look at her leg. Owen dropped the branch and came over to her. “It's broken, I think,” she said, wincing as he pushed the dress up to look.

He flinched, seeing the tip of her bone sticking out of her torn jeans. He went back to the tree, and broke off two branches. “Give me your coat, Lace. I need to splint this.” She did as he told, though she still winced when he tore the sleeves off of it. “Please,” he said, “Jack will get you a new one, we both know this. This is going to hurt.” He straightened her leg as best he could tightening on the splint. “Ow, what the hell?” He looked up at the sky, feeling what he thought were pebbles falling onto him.

“It's hailing now. Great,” Lacey said, laying back in a huff. “Your broken arm, my broken leg, we're stuck in a thunderstorm, and it's hailing, could this day get any worse?”

They looked up when there was another flash of lightening, terrified eyes wide as it silhouetted the funnel cloud heading their direction. Owen got to his feet, pulling Lacey up as well. “Come on, climb on, we got to find some kind of cover!” She managed to get on his back without jostling their injuries more than necessary, and he ran as best he could, though it was awkward with the Time Lady on his back. He kept an eye out for something that could be used for cover, not seeing anything.

“Look, a ditch, it's better than nothing!” She pointed. She winced again as he lowered her down, and laid down next to her. “We're going to die, aren't we?” She had to shout to be heard over the roaring of the tornado. He didn't say anything, just pulled her close, and she knew he thought they were dead too.

The storm raged on, and the two were battered by debris as it came crashing down on them. Owen groaned as something crashed into his side, cracking several ribs he was sure. He held Lacey tight against him, as much to comfort her as it was comfort for himself. He was turning to look at her, to try to shout above the storm when something hit him hard in the back of the head, and knocked him out, the last thing he heard was Lacey screaming.
