Summary: Lacey and Owen are stuck in the their childhood again, will this time be better?

Martha smiled as she walked up to Mickey. “Hey, so exactly what’s going on?”

“Well, at around,” He looked at his watch, “oh I’d say around four this afternoon, those two managed to set off some kind of alien device, and lose it at the same time.”

Martha rolled her eyes. “Nice, got that from Jack, but what’s wrong with them? Jack said something about them being turned into kids, but he seemed a bit preoccupied trying to figure out how to figure out whatever mess those two have caused this time.” He nodded at the tree the two were sitting in. Martha looked, but all she could see was a boy and girl sitting in a tree, dressed in some hand me downs, and looking to be in the middle of some kind of argument. She turned back toward to Mickey, eyes wide. “That’s Lacey and Owen?”

“Yeah, had about the same reaction when we first saw them. Jake and I grabbed this thing that fell through the Rift, Lacey was supposed to be archiving it, and having no luck even identifying its origins let alone what it did. Owen went in with some coffee as Jake and I went upstairs to mind the shop, the next thing we know, Rose is calling us downstairs, and there’s these two kids, and no Owen and Lacey.” He shook his head. “I don’t think they’re taking it very well.”

“If you got turned into a kid, would you be taking it well?” Martha shook her head, “Best get on with this, though, I might need to bring Tom in on this. He is a pediatrician.” She headed to the bottom of the tree, and looked up. “I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say you two are having a bad day?” She chuckled as they pelted her with sticks. “Ok, sorry, bad joke. Look, Jack sent me here to give you two a looking over. Now, we can try the balancing act up in the tree, or you can come down, and…” She reached into her medical bag, and pulled out two small bags of caramels, “I’ll give you these bags.”

Lacey looked at Owen, who shrugged, and nodded. He started down first, helping the smaller child down. She stood close to the boy, almost hiding behind him, he turned back to her, “It’s just Martha. Again I ask, when the hell were you ever this shy?”

“Gee, let me think, maybe when I was eight years old.” She rolled her eyes, and kicked him in the back of the leg.

“Ow, bitch.”

“Man-whore.”

“Slut.”

“Some things never change. Oi! You two knock it off or the sweets go back in the bag!” She said with a clap of her hands to get their attention, instantly regretting it when both kids jumped like they’d been smacked. She lowered her voice. “Ok, let’s save the name calling for later, ok? Who’s going first?” She watched Lacey nearly push Owen forward, and him glare back at her. “Well, thank you, Dr. Harper, for volunteering.”

“Yeah, some volunteer process, there’s only two of us, and she’s chicken shit.” Owen said, sitting down with crossed arms in front of Martha. She gave him a look, and he sighed, uncrossing his arms, and unbuttoning his shirt. “This is humiliating, and cold.” He muttered, gasping as she put the stethoscope up to his chest.

“Wouldn’t be as cold if we did this back at the Hub.”

“It’s all her fault, she wouldn’t leave the tree. Seems convinced that it’s just a matter of hours and we’ll be back to normal. Can’t seem to talk sense into her.”

Martha looked over at Lacey. She had her knees to her chest, and had her head buried in her arms. She’d never seen the Time Lady ever so distraught, not since the death of Ianto, and even then, around others she was so stoic. She was very much Jack’s daughter in that sense. She shook her head. “Ok, here’s the thing. Maybe she’s right. I know Jack and Ianto have pretty much holed up in the Archives.-“

“For sex,” the kids answered dully, resigned to the fact that everyone had given up on them.

“Not unless they’ve brought Gwen and Rose AND Jake into their little games of Naked Hide and Seek.” She shook her head. “I’m pretty sure that they’re trying to find something that was similar to the device or its origins.”

“They won’t find anything, I looked before I even started. There was nothing that fit it’s description…well, the quantum transducer, but that is a different piece of tech completely.” Lacey said, indignant that they wouldn’t believe her when she said that in the first place.

“Yeah, she knows that place better than the teaboy, if it’s not in there, it’s not in there.”

“Yeah, well, apparently that’s not stopping Jack from making a mess of the archives.” She smiled as both kids gave her an incredulous look. “I know, Ianto seems to be torn between helping him search and chastising him for screwing up his filing system.” They shared a laugh and a look as they could just see the exasperation on his face. “So, here’s the deal. If they do find a way to fix you in the next few hours, do you really want to be out here, in size eight in kids? Or do you want to be back in the Hub where your clothes are waiting?”

Lacey looked to Owen, again. He was starting to feel like she was putting too much trust in him to keep her sane while they lived in hell. He just shrugged. “You’re the one who wanted to stay, you’re the one who gets to chose if we go back.” He looked down as his stomach rumbling “Is there like real food back at the Hub?”

“Yes, Ianto ordered Pizza, I think.” She knew she had them now, especially when Lacey perked up at the mention of Pizza.

“Did he remember Buffalo wings?” She asked hopefully.

“I’m pretty sure he did.”

Lacey stood up, and nodded. “Ok, but only for food.”

“And the check-up. There’s still the bags of caramel at stake.”

“Ok, but that’s the only reason I’m going back.” She nodded, as if that would make them both believe it. She took Martha’s hand and grabbed Owen’s hand with her other. He rolled his eyes, but made no move to let go. If it kept the girl from freaking out and leaving him alone in the bleeding Hub, he’d pretty much go along with anything. She stopped when she saw Mickey move to join them. “He’s been here the whole time?” She asked looking up to Martha, and when Martha nodded, she dropped their hands and stalked ahead of them with her arms crossed, muttering something about not needing a babysitter.

Owen rolled his eyes. “Smooth move, Mickey. Maybe next time, wait til we’re back at the Hub, then show your face. What’s Jack’s problem anyways, we may be small, but we’re still able to take care of ourselves.” He let Lacey run off this time. He was tired of her looking to him for everything. She wasn’t helpless. And he was annoyed at himself that deep down, he was enjoying it, that she looked to him, and not to Jack, or Ianto, or even the Doctor. Which was something. “Has anyone called the Doctor?”

Lacey whirled and marched back. “They better not have. There’s no need for him to know.”

Martha didn’t say anything. They weren’t going to call him until they knew if they needed him, but she was very tempted to call him. She’d never examined the girl before, didn’t know her norms. Though she was pretty sure Owen could fill her in on whatever she didn’t know, there might be some odd differences that were normal for a child but unusual for an adult, or vice versa. She would wait and check the initial readings, then call him if anything seemed unusual. “No, we haven’t called him. Not yet, but we’re going to have to if you stay this way much longer.”

She didn’t say anything, just stood there, before looking down and nodding. She turned and started walking. Owen noticed she was walking with as much purpose, and looked just a little dejected. He caught up to her. “Hey,” he said with a nudge, “were you not much of a chatterbox at eight either?”

She just looked up at him, and shook her head. “Just, leave me alone, Owen, ok? I’m just hungry, and tired, and I want this over and done with so I can just take a nap.”

“It’d be easier to do that if you would stop grabbing at my hand, and looking to me to make decisions.” He said, storming off in his own huff. “I didn’t ask for this, you know.” He called over his shoulder. Walking through the door to the coffee shop and storm towards the back, he didn’t see her stop, biting her lip, and looking very lost before Mickey took her hand and walked her inside.
