The sound of a baby wailing drifted into his sleep addled brain, and the Doctor rolled to check the clock with a groan. They’d just put her down. Surely she couldn’t be awake again? He rolled to look at his wife. She still hadn’t heard the cries yet. He’d set the baby monitor to low, so he’d be the first to hear it. Heaven knows the red haired angel next to him needed rest after getting up with the baby every night, insisting she take care of the little one. He slipped out from under the covers, placing a kiss on Donna’s head as he headed towards the infant’s room.
She woke up when she reached for him and he wasn’t there. Still half-asleep, her mind was trying to figure out where her skinny spaceman of a husband wandered off to. Donna could also make out what sounded like singing from a distance. It took her a few minutes to realize it was coming over the monitor. She smiled as she realized the Doctor had woken up to care for Emma.
She got out of bed and headed towards the nursery. She leaned in the doorway as she watched the Doctor. He was singing quietly to their six week old daughter, walking back and forth to soothe her to sleep again. She was resting her head against his shoulder, already asleep again. He looked up at Donna with a smile. With one hand he signaled quiet as he laid her back in the crib. Walking over to her, the Doctor wrapped his arms around her. “You should be sleeping, love,” he whispered.
“What? And miss this?” She smiled as she kissed him. “Not a chance, Doctor.”
