Woo Jiho was proud. He was proud for having caught the hottest boy of the entire school. It wasn’t like he wasn’t hot, but it was different. While he was the rapper everyone was scared of but simultaneously respected and admired, Ahn Jaehyo was… He was the pretty boy. The one girls wanted in their beds and boys wanted to be.

Sadly for those girls, Jaehyo did not like them. At all. They were good friends, he said, but he’d rather keep them as far from his bed as possible.

No, Ahn Jaehyo was not a ladies’ man. He’d chosen Woo Jiho. Jiho, the one who was scary but talented, who always got into trouble and who’d most likely never graduate because he thought rapping was more important than school.

“It’s about priorities, right,” he always said. Jaehyo always laughed and agreed.

There was only one problem; no one knew about their relationship. No one except Jiho’s childhood friend Park Kyung and he didn’t count because he was all the way in New Zealand.

It made Jiho sad. Yes, he was immensely proud of having Jaehyo as his boyfriend, but what was the point if no one else knew, not even his own parents?

“Can’t we please,” Jiho begged, “come out on our four month anniversary?”

Four whole months with Jaehyo. It had been heaven. But Jaehyo refused.

“No,” he said, shaking his head. “What will they all think? What will my parents think?”

“Oh please,” Jiho said, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. “You’re smart, pretty and fun. Your parents love you. Everyone loves you, dammit. It’s not like they’ll all turn their backs to you.”

This was probably the biggest difference between them. Jaehyo was rather rich and had loving parents. Jiho’s family wasn’t exactly poor either, but his parents didn’t care at all for him. They probably had no clue that their son was an underground rap star.

“But I’m scare, Jiho. It feels as if they’ll all turn away and abandon me…”

“I won’t,” Jiho interrupted. “You know I’d never abandon you. If worse comes to worse, we can always live with Kyung in New Zealand, right?”

Jaehyo smiled, but it wasn’t happy enough for Jiho’s tastes and it didn’t really reach his eyes.

“But most of all, Jiho-ah, I’m scared they’ll attack you. I’m scared they’ll do all they can to drive you to… If not suicide, then disappearance.”

This time Jiho did roll his eyes

“You know me, Jaehyo. I can take care of myself, even if I have a whole school after me. I have my own army of underground fans, remember?”

This time Jaehyo did smile and Jiho could not resist kissing him.

~~

Jiho almost had him over, but of course he had to go and ruin everything by kissing him in public.

It started like any other day; Jaehyo left Jiho’s house earlier than the younger and took a different, longer route to school so no one would see the two together. Once in school, Jiho met up with his friends and watched Jaehyo being surrounded by his admirers on the other end of the corridor.

But today, Jiho had enough. One of Jaehyo’s admirers got a little too close, even attempting to grope him, and something in Jiho snapped.

Without thinking, he stalked over to Jaehyo and his admirers, pushing the admirers to the side to get to Jaehyo. When he did, he roughly pushed him up against the lockers, kissing him deeply.

“You’re mine,” he growled when he pulled away. “Don’t you fucking dare let them get near you.”

Then he turned on his heel and left before he could fully realize what he’d just done. He could feel everyone’s eyes on him as he walked out of school, could sense the silence attempting to choke him. Then there were words that chased after him, causing him to run.

“Jiho, you fucking asshole!” Jaehyo called after him. He shouted something more, but Jiho was already out of hearing range.

Jaehyo didn’t call him the following day and Jiho didn’t go to school; guilt was weighing heavy on his shoulders. What if Jaehyo’s friends really left him and it was all Jiho’s fault?

In the end he decided to call Kyung, who asked for the number to ‘this Jaehyo-asshole’ and promised to call him and talk to him. Jiho wasn’t sure it was the right thing to do, but in the end he gave in, like he always did.

~~

In the other end of town, Jaehyo was thoroughly confused when his phone rang and the screen showed a foreign number.

“Hello?” he said in English when he picked it up, just in case.

“Hello, is this Ahn Jaehyo?” the person on the other end asked in Korean. Jaehyo was relieved.

“Yes. Who is this?” he asked.

“My name is Park Kyung, I’m Jiho’s best friend,” the guy on the other end introduced himself. Jaehyo felt his whole body stiffen. So this was Park Kyung, Jiho’s childhood friend?

“Oh. Did he give you my number?”

“Yes. He called me before. He’s really worried, you know.”

Jaehyo was surprised. Jiho was worried? Because he kissed him in school?

“Why?” he asked, just to really clear things up.

“He’s scared he screwed things up really badly. I promised I’d talk to you. Are you mad at him?” Kyung asked in reply. Jaehyo admired this guy against his will. He was really loyal to his friends.

“Maybe a little bit,” he answered uncertainly. Was he mad at Jiho?

“Did your fears come true?”

Jaehyo was taken aback for a second before he realized Jiho must’ve told Kyung about what Jaehyo was scared of.

“Not really. Some left, but those who really mattered stayed. My parents don’t know yet,” he replied. On the other side, Kyung laughed. Yes, Jaehyo was happy Jiho had such a friend.

“See? You should call him then, tell him not to worry. Jiho’s a master at the art of torturing himself, you know.”

Jaehyo realized he didn’t know Jiho half as well as Kyung knew him. He didn’t know much about Jiho at all, except basic things; he knew his favorite food, what music he liked, the names of his closest friends and, of course, all of his preferences in bed. But he didn’t really know Jiho.

“He is?” he asked.

“Yes. You didn’t know?” Kyung replied, sounding a little taken aback himself.

“I just came to realized I don’t know Jiho all that well. Can you tell me about him?” Jaehyo asked. Kyung was silent for a moment.

“What do you know about him?” he said finally. Jaehyo recounted the things he knew about Jiho. This time Kyung was silent for so long that Jaehyo almost started worrying the line had disconnected.

“Jiho is… Special. He might seem tough, but he’s actually a really sensitive person. He takes all critique to heart, whether it be constructive or just plain mean. Have you ever seen him cry?”

“No.”

“I have. I’ve seen him cry because of really stupid things, like someone indirectly telling him he’s fat. But he also cries out of sympathy. When we were six, Jiho and I, we were playing in the park when I accidentally ruined a sand castle for this guy who was maybe a year or so older than us. He was pissed, of course, and started yelling at me. Me, being the scared little kid I was back then, started crying. Jiho instantly was there to protect me and yelled at the guy for being mean to me, even when he started crying too, because I was crying. He’s a really good friend like that; once you have his heart, he won’t let you go. He’ll protect you until you ask him not to or he dies.”

Kyung and Jaehyo spoke for several hours and when Jaehyo went to bed, he knew a lot more about Jiho than he even thought was possible knowing about someone else. Maybe he was also a little jealous of Kyung, who knew Jiho so well and could, from his stories, effortlessly joke around with him and tease him. Kyung, who could piss Jiho off but knew the perfect way to make him forgive him.

“They’re best friends, Jaehyo,” he reminded himself, “not ex-lovers.”

~~

Jaehyo did go over to Jiho’s place the next morning, wearing a shit-eating grin as Jiho glared at him for waking him up before he fully realized who was standing on the porch.

“Jaehyo!” he exclaimed, obviously resisting the urge to jump the older boy and hug him for all he was worth. Jaehyo’s grin widened; talking to Kyung had really taught him a lot about Jiho. Instead, Jaehyo took the one step forward that separated him from Jaehyo and enveloped him in a hug.

“Fuck all the haters,” he muttered into Jiho’s hair, “I love you.”

Jiho laughed as he clung onto Jaehyo’s frame, face hidden in the elder’s neck as he inhaled his scent in deep breaths.

“You talked to Kyung, didn’t you,” he stated. Jaehyo chuckled.

“Yes, I did. Interesting guy, Kyung.”

“Mm. Let’s not think about Kyung right now,” Jiho murmured as he attached his lips to Jaehyo’s neck. “Let’s stay home today.”

Jaehyo laughed but didn’t protest.

“Insatiable beast.”
