SUMMARY: Krystal and Sulli meet on the fourth of July in Korea, where that day doesn't really matter.

↬NOTE(S): Written for the fourth of July!  Instead of plugging my ears with the ends of my pillow, I decided to write about JungLi.  ^__^
Also, sorry about the lowercase. ㅜ.ㅜ

she was doomed.

krystal had heard the principal's secretary talking on the phone.  the letters holding their semester reports had been mailed just the other day.

sneaky, krystal thought bitterly.  to use a school holiday to mask the release of such an malicious piece of flimsy eight by eleven and a half paper.  no doubt it contained the crest of the school.  embossed in the black and silver, the crest would shine and make the perfect facade of importance and merit.

krystal felt sick.

it had been her one chance to escape all of this.  korea, the dirty streets, and even dirtier girls who lingered in the backs of allies and had hard as tack fists.

besides it was going to be the fourth of july soon.  surely her parents would let her return to america for that particular holiday? krystal thought desperately.

krystal felt as if she would burst from the inside out if she didn't get a chance to see those amazing lights so near, but so high in the sky.  to see those sparkling shows again with amber's warm hand entwined with hers...

but that was the reason for this.  the reason for her exile to korea.  she laughed bitterly at the irony.  she had been sent away because she had dared to love a girl.  now, they wouldn't let her get away from the nasty ones that beat her up and ripped her expensive clothes every day after school.

instead of going back home the way she normally did, krystal ducked through a wiry fence and resorted to walking along the river.  her head and one shoulder was chronically tilted diagonally, just in case those hulking unnis would try and ambush her from behind.  krystal knew she'd have hell to pay for not going her usual route.

"trying to shirk your daily duties of being our punching bag?" they'd probably ask.

but krystal didn't care.  not today.

she floated randomly, meandering and zigzagging on the dirt path surrounded by un-manicured bushes and weeds.  she thought of the man-made explosions that sounded like thunder produced by fairies or mischievous elves rather than the practical and unrelenting mother nature.

"doesn't matter" she muttered under her breath, feeling that she'd cry if she didn't speak aloud.  "watching the fireworks wouldn't be the same without ..."

it was a giggle that made krystal snap her head up.  and the voice came from a twin pigtailed girl with porcelain skin whiter than krystal's.  for a second, krystal thought she saw soft billows of smoke surrounding the girl, like the aftermath of a controlled explosion up in a dark night sky.

"hello" the girl told her, waving a hand.

krystal just grasped the sides of her pleated uniform skirt and forced her gaze downward.  she had never seen this girl around here before.  but the girl was, for now, on the other side of the river.

krystal looked at the wet barrier that would potentially save her.  but instead she just got a close up look at the soft white sweater the girl was wearing.  the river had shriveled into something of a sad trickle during the course of krystal's private walk and talk session.  and now, the strange girl had easily crossed onto krystal's side.  the girl was standing in front of krystal now.

too close, thought krystal.  but she forced herself to look at and glare into the girl's eyes.

"who are you?" krystal nearly growled.

the smile in the girl's eyes faltered a bit and she stepped back, unsure.

"i..i'm sulli" the stranger told her.  the girl reclaimed her smile in a split second.  "just moved here.  you?"

"the name's krystal, but don't bother memorizing it.  i'm moving away soon" she lied.

and after that, krystal had totally planned on stomping away, coolly and in a tough, don't-stick-your-nose-into-my-business manner.  but the damn rock that had been sticking out of the dirt (which krystal had deigned to kick in order to really stamp that image into the new girl) was in fact just the tip of some boulder that had been buried in the dirt for some years now.

krystal fell face first.  she was surprised.  because, just like the movies, it felt a little like slow motion.  her mind was moving quicker than reality.  she assessed, in her head, that landing face first into the rocky and dirty pathway would hurt less than her daily beatings.  so she resigned to it and maybe even slumped a bit more to get it over with.

what krystal didn't expect was the warm set of arms that encompassed her chest, right over her barely there breasts.

"ah!  gotcha!"

krystal blinked her eyes, willing away the shocked blush.  and when her mind caught up with reality once more, she was in the arms of the girl who's name she'd just found out.  krystal noted that she smelled a little like lighter fluid and freesias.

"whew!  i thought you were going to really eat it there for a second."

sulli's arm strength pushed against krystal's shoulders and soon, they were looking at each other eye to eye.

"ee hee hee" sulli laughed.

when krystal said nothing still, sulli pulled krystal in for another tight hug.

"i'm sorry.  were you scared?"

krystal had never known bones to be so soft.  she felt the skinny girl's frame against her own, felt the strong grip of sulli's fingers through her blazer.

maybe when they're covered by unmarred skin and good intent, krystal thought.

she felt herself squeezing back and tentatively burying her nose into the crook of sulli's neck just to make sure the smell was really lighter fluid.  and by the time krystal had determined that yes, it was, sulli had decided aloud, for the both of them, that they were friends.

when they broke the hug, sulli confessed with a bashful blush that she had been sent to this neighborhood, to krystal's school, because she had a problem.

krystal held her breath.

"i have a problem with fire" sulli admitted.  "i like to see things burn."

krystal couldn't feel horrified because of sulli's unwavering, bright smile.

"don't you think flames are just beautiful?  almost like fireworks, but you don't see those too often..."

krystal took hold of sulli's hand.

"you know, where i used to live...we had a whole day devoted to fireworks."

"really?!  the whole day?!  with fireworks?!"

not really, thought krystal, but she smiled for the first time in a long while saying, "really!  the whole day..."
