We are now into week 12 and Nick called in earlier in the week to say he was leaving again for the country, but if the job he is doing there is not completed by this weekend it will have to wait, and he will be giving our kitchen his full attention. That makes me very happy. I can't wait for the dishwasher to be operational, and I would like to get on with the kitchen, since I also have to get painters in, and then decide on flooring.
A sales rep. from Spotlight called recently and quoted on blinds. The quote was staggering, as I suspected it would be. However, last week Spotlight e-mailed that they were having yet another sale. I decided to go in and look at the blinds on offer, and found a section of very good quality blinds discounted to $29.95, better than the $314 a bespoke blind would have cost. I bought blinds for the kitchen, and also the front window of the living room as the curtains don't completely meet, and this is where visitors sleep. The blinds themselves are roller blinds in a sateen cotton, a pleasant shade of rose pink which is a tawny pink rather than a 'pink' pink, and they have a mechanism which winds them up and down, instead of a pull string. Obviously they were 'remaindered' stock as those colours are no longer available. There was also a blind in a 'pink' pink which would have looked lovely in the bedroom, but unfortunately it was not available in the size I needed. Altogether I had 3 trips into town this week which left me tired, but at least I accomplished.
Les has been back to his GP to have stitches removed, and he is waiting now for a referral to an ultrasound clinic, conveniently located near to our home. The scan will show how the blood is flowing through his heart, and pinpoint what is wrong. We are both worried, as obviously his heart is wearing out, and it is uncertain if anything can be done. When he brought up the subject I told him that we are both getting old, and I am resigned to the fact that one of us will be left alone, and it is likely to be me. Actually I am having bad moments, but I am hiding them from him.
The cleaning up of the garden continues, and even though it is costing a lot of money the improvement is amazing. The chap doing the weeding is envious of our pumpkin patch, he says he has never seen anything like it, and his own pumpkin patch looks sad in comparison. The question is 'will the pumpkins ripen before the first frost'? The tomatoes are also doing well, but are still green. This doesn't matter since I can pull the plants out and hang them under cover to ripen before the frost occurs, and green tomato chutney is another option.
I splurged on heaps of spring bulbs last week, which I hope to get planted soon. I am missing having a flower garden, and this is a move in the direction I wish to go. I bought narcissus, bluebells, tulips, dutch iris and daffodils. The dutch iris comprised a bag of 50 mixed bulbs plus 2 small samples of named varieties, which look very beautiful. Hope they will be true to type.
