24 vs. House

I've bought some TV series on DVD recently... Because I work nights, because I work the hours I do, because I often have other things to do when these shows are on, and because I don't have TIVO, I tend to do so. And they're WAY cheap at a local buy/sell/used store.

House, M.D.
I love this show! So far, the first season has been exciting. There's plenty of material for me to look up and study more on. And I identify with House just a little. I enjoy a good challenge. I enjoy working the problem, when time counts. That might strike a reader as a sort of perverse thing to enjoy... but adrenaline is what got me into medicine. Rescues. Lifesaving. Fixing problems. Helping people, when they need help the most.

And believe it or not, I still get some interesting problems at a nursing home... Two nights ago, it took me some detective work and subtle symptoms to figure out that one of our gentlemen, then unresponsive, probably had somehow gotten an accidental dose (OD?) of narcotics. He was never supposed to get anything like that. A phone call at two in the morning, and I was running for the Narcan to antidose him. Fifteen minutes later, he was awake and talking. Score!

And it prolly helps that I know a doctor or two like House... Doctor F., who I call for all issues, has the same dry wit, the same intolerance for BS, but with a slightly more human touch. And he trusts his nurses, after they prove themselves a bit.

I wish episodes of House went longer... they could fit a lot more cool stuff in, I'm sure.

24
Three words: Not. That. Impressed.

Really.

I'm ten episodes into the first season. The schtick is that every episode is one hour in a 24-hour day, right? So why hasn't Jack Bauer once gone to the bathroom, eaten anything, let alone scratched himself? The Counter-Terrorist Unit has had several deaths, at least two betrayals, and two changes of control where someone marches in and takes over of the whole operation. Not to mention all of the interpersonal crap. How the hell does anyone get anything done there??? I can't buy that this is anything like a military unit, even if they say so. There's a parade of pretty gals to draw the male viewers, but none of them engages the mind. Prolly doesn't help that I've been watching the episodes serially, one after another, instead of waiting a week between, but that's still the fault of the writers. Sorry, I just can't suspend disbelief enough to enjoy this one.
