(Images are drawings of me and my outfit - the Before and After - as drawn in a letter sent to a friend.)
So the other week, I found out that there was a radio station hosting a free concert featuring one of my favorite artists, Sara Bareilles (If I shared music with you in Europe, that’s no surprise).
I managed to finagle the Sunday off and on that rainy, misty Sunday I headed out there! The concert was set to start at 12, with doors opening at one. I got in the line to ENTER at 12:30. The line that was over a kilometer long. In this line I made some new friends and discovered that cognac is quite smooth - a hard liquor I can actually drink! Amazing! I was in line with these new friends of mine all the way up to the front, where they actually closed the gates on us. We were the next in line and they stopped the line because the venue was near capacity. Thankfully, being nice and friendly with the cops holding the line paid off and they remembered us as being in front (lots of people were pushing ahead, the line did NOT want to be held back)…along with a group of Irish girls who were trying to sweeten up the cops. We finally crossed into the field and festival after 2:30pm!
Upon entering, we picked our spot (where we could still see the stage!) and set up our blankets and sheets. There we shared their cognac, my food (all rabbit food, and not necessarily fantastic concert sharing food, but it was just the lunch I’d packed for myself), more laughs and chatter with yet MORE Irish girls. They were all there to see Ed Sheeran.
Sara was originally slated to perform at 1:45, but luck was with me and she went on late. We heard the last couple songs of the artist before her, then Sara came on and I got to enjoy every single song of her set live! Some of it was enjoyed sitting down, some of it was enjoyed getting food, all of it was enjoyed while singing every word.
After that, it was announced that there’d be a huge delay because the weather (still rainy. Well ‘rainy’. It was heavily misting - the most rain could barely be called a sprinkle. Maybe spitting. It was still wet, though! And for planes the visibility was probably tough!) was keeping Ed Sheeran at the airport! My new friends and I decided to split and run at that point, and after walking to their car, they gave me a ride home and we all parted ways!
I wish I had gotten a photo of me with my new friends, but somehow, the attempt only got me a photo of a whole bunch of Irish girls with neither me, nor my new friends in the photo. What can you do?
Really, though, that day was amazing. Making friends in line like that and enjoying the moment through the rain and the mist and all the little hang-ups really brought back the feeling of life I got used to while couchsurfing.
