I was really curious to know which ones people like best. Her teacher fell in love with number three, but I was just telling the kid that I thought it was a matter of personal taste. And you've just proved my point! :-) Thanks!
I commented above to Azdak about the elemental poem. Her teacher's reaction was very funny.
Thanks for the feedback! I've been sharing all of the responses with my daughter and she's really enjoying all the encouragement. As for me, I'm thinking I should get an inspirational poster printed up - No Stags! I'd put it over my computer, to remind me never to take my work TOO seriously.
They're absolutely terrific. For me it's a toss-up between "Young Mary was not very airy!" (clearly your daughter has been given training in all the right literary antecedents) and number 1. No, I'm just kidding, Mary is very funny and very good, but number 1 blows me away. How the hell did the kid get that kind of insight after only 12 years on this planet? And the Elemental invocation is also excellent.
I got to speak to her teacher today! She had noted that the Elemental poem seemed unfinished and gave it the equivalent of a "B". What she hadn't realized was that the first letters spelled out "Elemental" - not at all obvious in my dd's handwriting. It reads like a much more finished work when you realize what's going on. We agreed that the kid ought to be typing up her work so that details like this don't get overlooked in the future.
Then her teacher looked at her and said, "But you just ripped these poems right out of your journal, stapled them together, and handed them in, didn't you?"
My daughter hung her head. "But I thought about the first four for quite a while!"
Too funny! :-D I gather she's trying to get the kid to push past natural talent and actually extend herself a bit.
I like your icon! I was very late learning to read, but I know I did try writing my biography when I was eight. It began, "My life began at the age of four...". I didn't know what I did before that, either!
Thanks for the feedback - I passed it on to my daughter.

AAAAUUUGH! How much do I hate school and its attitude that everything can be "graded"????
she's trying to get the kid to push past natural talent and actually extend herself a bit.
This, on the other hand, I really approve of :-)
