I do enjoy this kid's writing...

My twelve year old daughter wrote several poems for school.

Me, I don't know much about poetry, but I do like the fact that these all rhyme. And that they're not emo or angst-ridden!

Anyway...

Assorted poems, all untitled, by my 12yo

1.
all i had known was,
mystic and magic.
all i had known was wonder.
but my life has changed,
and everything else,
shall straighten, when first
it bowed under.

2.
Splash!
The wild waters flew
into the shining sea.
Crash!
The ancient oak has fallen.
The tempest felled a tree.

3.
There once was a girl, name of Mary
Who really did look like a fairy.
She once tried to fly
And started to cry
Young Mary was not very airy!

4.
Every flame shall bow to me
Lithe and graceful they flicker
Earth shall obey my command
May you never bicker.
Ethereal air, shall listen to me
New and strong, you glide.
Torrents of water, heed my call
Awaken, do not try to hide
Listen to me, Elemental.

5.
With dragons and phoenixes
I will fly
And upon a unicorn
I will ride
And among the mermaids
I shall swim
With magic I can follow
every whim.

6.
I see that gleam in your eye
I know that soon you'll seem to fly
And never will you tell me why
You cat, you might just make me cry.

I think the kid is a MUCH better writer than I was at her age. I actually still have some of my own poetry from back then, and other than one bit of blank verse about ice that my mother sent to *everyone* in her Christmas cards, my poetry was frankly awful.

A particularly memorable epic started this way...

"Over the river,
and into the trees,
bounded a creature,
infested with fleas."

Said creature being a noble stag, of course. Whose nobility so overwhelmed the hapless hunter ("His head he held aloft/his heart he did the same"), that his gun fell from his "nerveless hands". Yes, I was deadly serious.

And consequently my feelings were very hurt when my mother and her friends all laughed. ;-)

I can't wait to see what my daughter will be writing a few years from now!
