Harmony marks my very first FAKE fanfic. I never expected to write a FAKE fanfic, and at the very least not one for Ryo and Dee, because I couldn't get their voices right in my head. Drake and JJ are easier to hear, but that may be due in part to their minor character status.
This piece was inspired by
awieatti's
"Singing in the Shower" drabble. Ryo having a nice singing voice is totally my headcanon, though I strongly dislike songfics, so I tend to avoid any story with the boys singing like the plague. I've read several stories where Dee is also a good singer, which I have no problem with, but the Dee in my headcanon just isn't that guy. He likes singing, and has no problem doing so regardless of who's around, but he's just not going to be the next American Idol. Plus, contrast between the two is always nice, right?
Ryo's embarrassment over being heard singing reminded me of my partner, who will not sing in front of anyone but me. He, however, does not have the best singing voice. But he'll sing to me anyway, softly when we awkward-slow dance (I can't wait til he can ballroom dance with me). And that's what inspired the second part of the story.
I realized after writing this story, and after reading through it a few times on AO3 (because I'm a dork like that), that it works well as a metaphor for Ryo and Dee's relationship. Dee is loud and uninhibited while Ryo is subdued and unsure, but he will one day will be more bold and confident in it all. This wasn't a conscious decision (should I even admit that? haha), but I really like how well it works
I intend on making this a podfic soon, as I have recently discovered this phenomenon and am hooked. I competed on my middle school and high school speech teams and did theatre most of my youth. I miss performing. Plus, I think it would be cool to put my interpretation of the piece out there. I'll include that here as soon as it's complete.
