It has been brought to my attention that it is national poetry month. I shall follow
wordsofastory's lead and post a poem every day. One of my favorite English teachers had a unit within his Writing Fiction and Poetry class dedicated to song lyrics, so song lyrics will be included in this endeavor.
Masks
Shel Silverstein
I had so much fun going through my Shel Silverstein books, I just couldn't resist picking another one his poems. This was my favorite poem growing up. Such an important message, wrapped up in a kid-friendly package.
I still wore many mask growing up, and do to this day in many settings thanks to the stigma of mental illness, but it did encourage me to stop pretending I liked the same things as everyone else in hopes that they would like me. I found my best friend in middle school when I stopped caring what people would think of me playing video games and watching anime and wearing "weird clothes" and listening to foreign music. I found my fiance in college when, my second day on campus, I walked straight up to a medieval re-enactment group and said "How do I join", even though new acquaintances warned me of the social consequences. I found my voice in college when I started advocating for lgbtq* and mental health causes, even when I was warned of the backlash I might receive from co-operating teachers and the parents of my students in the small, close-minded town.
We all wear masks from time to time, but don't hide the most important parts of yourself.
