I was calculating my “anniversary” dates with ZaiZai. And I realized that my Beijing Airport anniversary was yesterday! It’s been 2 years since I last “talked” to him at the Beijing Airport, not knowing whether he understood even just a little bit of my ramblings and then later finding out that he did understand what I was trying to say!
ZaiZai: Is there anyone from the Philippines? (asked during Mars Meet & Greet in Beijing)
Of course at that time I was clueless that he was already asking for “me”. If I had known, I would have already jumped to the stage, lol!
And it’s really cosmic coz 2 years after that phenomenal event, he was again in Beijing probably waiting for me so we could celebrate! Nyahahaha! *mekawish*
But this time he is promoting Delicious Relationship, now renamed to Fairy Tale Romance! (Why in the world did they change the title?!)
.........
abcdef4zz of Vicpower kindly translated this very looong and exhaustive Japanese article about ZaiZai. I’m posting it here because the article is really meant to be shared. I love how meticulous and professional these Japanese reporters can be. While most reporters in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China keep on asking Zai about his relationship, their counterparts in Japan actually take time to delve into Zai’s thoughts about his professional career. And the result of these interviews with Japanese media is very informative. I really love reading about Zai’s thoughts regarding his career because you could see his growth and maturity as an actor.

Zai: Prince Charming from Meteor Garden debut
Let’s revisit Zai’s steps: from idol to actor
Hua Ze Lei: The Start of the Story
The most fortunate thing that could have happened to Angie Chai, Meteor Garden’s producer, was to find a cast that was individually suited to his role, to be able to find Jerry Yan, Ken Chu, Vanness Wu, all of them newcomers with much potential. It was a challenge to decide who should play the role of HuaZeLei. However, Angie Chai trusted her instincts - the youth who appeared at the casting venue, standing to the side with his back to the judges all the time, the one who accompanied a friend to the screen test.
The Real Hua Ze Lei
Zai was surprised that he ended up being chosen, rather than the friend he accompanied to the audition. For the mischievous Zai, he may have imagined and appreciated the humor in this result. But this was the reality. At the time, “acting” was not in his plans. As a result, Zai must have faced a serious dilemma. He did consider refusing. Because of his mom’s support, his curiosity got better of him and he thought it might be fun. With the belief that “if I don’t like it, I’ll just quit”, an innocent youth from Yilan climbed on his stallion and went on his way without restrain.
第一章 很大的一步 Chapter 1: A Big Step
Vic Chou’s start as an actor happened as a surprise, with no training in acting, not even the thought of becoming an actor. For him, taking the important role of Lei must have been a heavy and tremendous burden. Despite this, the Zai we see in MG, was as if Lei has come alive. Introverted, taking no interest in other people’s business, someone possessing glass-sculpture-like vulnerability: Lei. A role which requires great acting skills to express his deep down inner feelings, and Zai was very convincing. The other members of F4 also did well. However, considering the extent of the diversity between the role and the actor’s personality, no one surpassed Zai. This is because the off-screen Zai and Lei are entirely different in personality; Lei’s expression staring into space is entirely different from Zai’s staring into space during interviews.
Normally, one would try to adjust the role to suit the actor, or cast an actor close to the role’s personality, when he’s a newcomer (actually someone with absolutely no experience). However, this was almost impossible with MG due to an entire cast of newcomers. And because of this, Zai had to portray Lei completely in accordance with the character as contemplated in the manga. The production company had to make a big decision. It’s hard to imagine now, but at the beginning, Ken Chu was considered for the role of Lei. Producer Chai made a bet on Zai’s high level of adaptability.
In the end, the casting for the TV series was perfect. The look at Shanchai after picking up the basket kicked over by Dao Ming Si (Jerry Yan). The smile when he kissed Shanchai after telling her “you’re beautiful” in front of the display window, the look on his face when he bought the pastry in the cake shop where Shanchai worked, all these moments were as if the character, which only previously existed in mangas, was brought to life by Zai. Of course, all the scenes thereafter were great, however, the eyecatching presence of Zai in episodes 1 and 2 must be the reason for MG’s success. But how was Zai, who had no acting experience, able to act so intelligently. The impact of the support by Angie Chai, and the directing skills of Cai Yue Xun cannot be emphasized enough, to bring out Zai’s consistent acting. Director Cai’s direction has greatly affected Zai’s development as an actor. “Cai is not only a director to be respected, he’s also an elder to be respected”.
As he said, Zai learnt a lot from CaiDao, who also started out as an actor. CaiDao brought out the best in Zai’s acting skills through his patience and his method of directing, using his experience and examples to explain the character. Of course, there are a lot of actors who are not able to bring out their talent even if they were given a chance to work with such a talented director. The reason why Zai didn’t end up this way is to a large extent attributable to his personality. From his debut in MG, Zai did not think about taking short cuts to fame and fortune. He was not overly ambitious in his “work hard and be happy” attitude which resulted in positive chemistry between him and CaiDao, which furthered the improvements in his acting. Zai was able to participate in filming the series with a more relaxed attitude and he did not let his series of NGs affect his concentration. This is part of his acting talent.
My favorite role is HuaZeLei
Other than being the first character he played, there may be other more profound thoughts in his words. Besides being extremely popular in Taiwan, MG also swept across south East Asia, Mainland China and Japan. Previously in Japan there was a movie version of MG (note: I skipped the names of the Japanese stars). But it was obvious that the TV version last year (which attracted certain negative comments in Chinese circles) wanted to compete with MG. Zai, through his start in Taiwan drama series, not only gained a lot in the process, but also solidified his path as an actor.
第二章 仔仔和山田太郎 Chapter 2: Zai and Taro
With the good start of MG, besides setting a record high in ratings for Taiwanese drama series, it also became the topic of much discussion. At the height of MG’s popularity, Vic Chou’s popularity soared and he became another icon of F4 in addition to Jerry Yan. Before MG was completed, Zai started to make Poor Prince concurrently. If MG was considered Vic Chou’s debut, the Poor Prince must be ZaiZai’s (Vic Chou’s pet name, which means “little boy”) debut. Taro is goodlooking, an idol in school, has an excellent academic record, and an all-round athelete. He’s also the eldest of an extremely poor family. Poor Prince was adapted from a manga, just like MG. Taro, similar to Lei, is a prince charming, but Taro is also a comical character.
Zai created a prince charming image with Lei in MG. With Taro, he completed a perfect image turnaround, “ZaiZai” like adorable and heartwarming. This challenge of an image turnaround is normally made by actors who want to break new grounds after playing a few similar roles. But Zai did it in only his second role. Although the character is closer to the real Zai than Lei, it’s definitely not a simple feat to play an entirely different character for a newcomer. More than that, he accomplished it by doing it concurrently, one day playing Lei, the next day Taro, definitely not easy for any actor. After Zai completed Lei’s crying scenes, he went straight to Taro’s set to play the family reunion scenes.
Besides the filming of the 2 TV series, Zai also had to participate in the recording of Meteor Rain, and the photo shoot for his pictorial book. It’s hard to imagine how he completed all this work in a packed schedule. Even in these adverse conditions, for someone who liked pranks (at least he did in the beginning), he might have thought playing 2 entirely different characters was a lot of fun. When playing Taro, Zai was lively like fish in water. The smile of craving, the look of longing, the expression of being depressed when Taro has inadvertently hurt someone’s feelings, the colorful expressions, are all a reflection of Zai’s acting skills.
Jay Chou once said Zai can make people laugh with his facial expressions, and we can somehow get a glimpse of the real Zai through Taro’s expressions. Even when he’s dressed as a maid or a nurse, because it’s played by Zai, one would never find it cheap.
Taro is very much like me.
Even Zai said so. The role of Taro let us see the real ZAI. Zai also said he’s suitable for comedies. As the youngest of F4 who enjoys making people laugh, Zai’s image and Taro’s overlapped perfectly. Poor Prince was also very popular in Japan.
In the 3rd drama series “Come to My Place” that followed, Zai played a photographer full of confidence (cocky?). Lei was aloof, slightly detached. Taro was funny and naughty. Zai continued to challenge an entirely different character, and again, we see an astounding change. On watching the first scene of Zhong Yuan, there must be many people wondering whether this was the same person who played Lei and Taro. The Zhong Yuan who yelled at the magazine editor in his wrath, who threw the photos taken by Qian Yong (the main character) to the floor with disdain, Zai through this beginning scene, successfully imprinted his character’s dedication and passion towards photography on the audience’s mind.
Besides the first scene, in another scene where Zhong Yuan stated to doubt his own works in his jealousy of Qian Yong’s talent, Zai’s powerful and superb acting skills, made us think the voice over was almost redundant. Regretably for his fans, Zai’s appearances in Come to My Place were few and far between. Maybe it was because the character is a supporting role that made people better observe and feel Zai’s improvement and growth in his acting skills. Every time Zhong Yuan appeared on screen, the background music became suspenseful, this arrangement added spice to what might have been a boring and heavy plot. The contrast of Zhong Yuan’s sharp look in his eyes, reflecting his unwavering belief, with Qian Yong’s misgivings about life, made the structure of the plot more apparent to the viewers. If we remember that Zai’s previous role was Taro, it just makes us appreciate even more the extent of change in Zai’s acting skills. As it is just a supporting role, Come to My Place cannot be considered a representative piece of his work, but this is a series which enabled Zai to extend the realms of his acting, to say the least.
第三章 覺醒的才能 Chapter 3: Awakening Talent
With 3 series in a short span of a year, Zai became a real star. However, at the same time of becoming famous, Zai’s life became extremely busy. Appearances in entertainment shows, filming of the MG sequel, concert, his second pictorial book, making of Pepsi commercials, his solo album, etc. Even though he was then financially independent, his life was as far from “free” as can be imagined. Going to school accompanied by his assistant, followed and chased by fans after school, to be reported on about rumours without any truth, all disrupted his private life. Of course, all this can be considered challenges that a star has to go through, but to have everything happen in the first year of his professional acting life must have been extremely daunting. In addition, Zai’s low priority in terms of making more money, was a bit inconsistent with an agency which did not let any opportunity of making more money slip away.
In the end, Zai’s mom could not bear to see her son working so hard, that she implored the agency not to give her son so much work. Zai felt so miserable that even other F4 members were sympathetic. From that point on, Zai very often expressed his with to take life easy, to return to farming. Despite all this, Zai did not give up on acting. Whatever the co-workers requested, he would always answer with a simple “yes”, and he chose to be silent about those rumours that had no basis. While he learnt the survival skills of a performer, Zai also gradually rose from adversity. It must be the star aura exuded from Zai through this adversity that made him no longer considered a newcomer even though he only made 3 TV series up to that time.
His fourth series, Love Storm, created much discussion because of co-starring with Vivian Hsu and Ken Chu. Unfortunately, it can be said that this series was the least rewarding for Zai. In this series, Zai’s character is a manager of a TV shopping channel, Lu Ying Feng. It was also the first time that Zai’s character was not a student in school, and because the character was written to have been involved in underworld activities, many people thought this would again bring out another side of Zai that has not been seen before.
But the general impression for this drama series was very different from people’s expectations. And even if we tried to be complimentary, we couldn’t honestly say this was a well made production. It lacked the fast pace of a love comedy, and together with Vivian’s capricious acting, what could have been a coherent storyline, and Ken’s special effect make up, all became very unconvincing. Zai worked hard on his diction in preparation, had to eat 5-6 lollipops a day while filming. He didn’t relax a bit. Even though he gave his best, it was very hard to see his charismatic performance under a poorly made production.
After the release of his album, his popularity continued to rise, and F4’s activities extended to all parts of Asia. Maybe because of this, his performance in Love Storm made less of an impression as an actor, and more of his presence as an idol. Maybe this was all part of the plans of the production company.
Because F4 began to be active in Asia, with only few individual acts in 2002-2003, this was probably a stagnated period for the actor Zai. However, in 2004, Zai came across a piece of work that would become the turnaround point in his actor life. MARS. The biggest reason that Zai agreed to take on the project was because the director for this work was Cai Yue Xun, and because the female lead was DaS. This brought him more confidence in his decision. For someone who considers the atmosphere on the set to be important, the cast and crew on MARS put him at ease.
To prepare for this role, Zai finished his promotion of his new album early, and started to prepare to get a license for riding the motorcycle. It was because of the uneasiness he felt towards his role that made him start preparing for it more enthusiastically than any of his previous roles.
How Should I Play the Part...
That was the feeling Zai had when he received the script. This was not hard to understand. In MARS, Zai played a pair of twins, one is Chen Ling, with a tormented past; the other is Chen Sheng, twin brother of Ling who committed suicide. Just the fact that he had to play 2 roles was already a challenge. Besides, Ling’s complicated character also worried Zai. Ling lost his mother when he was young, and his brother threw himself off a building in front of his own eyes. But all these memories were repressed subconsciously. Ling had no recollection of why Sheng committed suicide. Chen Ling was the perfect specimen for Freudian study, and this was the character Zai was to play.
Ling had complicated innermost feelings. How to portray the character most appropriately, how to closely reflect the character as contemplated in the original manga, these all worried me.
The director took seriously the original manga’s outlook, consistent with his direction in White Tower. For MARS then, the director wanted to follow the image in the manga faithfully. As a matter of fact, many details in the series were exactly the same as in the manga. Zai had been successful up to now in playing roles that originated from mangas. However, this role was very different from all the others in the past and cannot be taken lightly. To be able to play this role well, Zai must have realized that he had to reach a higher level of acting skills than before.
On Director Cai’s suggestion, Zai made reference to Mel Gibson’s performance in Lethal Weapon (?) (note: there were reports at that time that it was “conspiracy theory”). This kind of making things simple and therefore easy to understand is exactly Director Cai’s charming style. In order to be well-prepared for the role, Zai spent a lot of time in preparation on all fronts. Because Ling was a talented motorcycle racer, Zai started training on riding motorbikes. Through his wholehearted building of the role, Zai was successful in his evolution as an actor.
Zai’s growth in his acting can be felt right from the start of the story. Ling’s playboy image extends a masculinity that is entirely different from Lei. Through his varied expressions, one can sense a danger that is absent from the role of Taro. When Ling threatened the teacher with a paper-knife, one can feel a wildness that is not present in either Zhong Yuan or Lu Ying Feng. In addition, in the scene where Qi Luo’s mother and child drawing reminded him of his deceased mother, one can somewhat sense Zai’s development.
In the latter part of the series, Zai’s acting did not relax a bit. Scenes where he broke down on recollections of Sheng, his interactions with Tong Dao, the sense of loss when he had to give up riding his motorbike, the joyful delight when he was able to pick up his racing again, and his conversations with his father in the final scenes... these memorable scenes were everywhere. Zai combined all his previous roles and raised his acting to a higher level, and then assimilated his idea of the ideal male into the character of Ling. MARS was comprehensive in showing Zai’s acting versatility.
Because of this role, I came to like acting more and developed a sense of responsibility toward my work.
Through MARS, not only did Zai develop as an actor, it also allowed him to grow in terms of how he conducts himself. As the lead, he was in the forefront of accountability for the success or failure of the series, and this also led to the change in his professionalism.
I became more assertive after that.
Jerry Yan made similar comments about Zai around the same time. Even people around him could sense the change in him. To come across something that can be considered as representative piece of work at the young age of 23 is fortunate for any actor. To be able to make this happen according to his wishes, it’s not hard to see or feel the rare talent that Vic Chou possesses.
第四章 身為演員的自覺 Chapter 4 : Self-awareness as an actor
From idol to character actor, Zai, who successfully shifted his positioning, showed his talent again in 2005 in Silence, a love story with Korea’s PiaoEnHui (Park Eun Hye). Zai’s character is a handsome and knowledgeable 2nd generation entrepreneur, Qi Wei Yi, a man who is proud, successful and very demanding of himself and people around him. One day, he was diagnosed to be terminally ill with only three months to live. A life that’s fast coming to an end, a female lead who is speech impaired, crossing paths and missing each other time and again. Amidst all these which are typical of the Korean drama series plot, Zai completely showed the repressed emotions of the character.
When filming Qi Wei Yi breaking into cold sweat with the pain, Zai said “I’ll make myself break into a sweat, I don’t need the help of spray mist for effect”, he even read the script a few times after filming was completed. All of these gave us an indication of his dedication in his character buildup. We don’t know how it was decided to cast Piao as the female lead, but to appear in the same series with Andy Hui, Fung Shui Fan, character actors from Hong Kong must be a good experience for Zai who’s been working hard to improve.
Zai’s work on TV series did not stop there. He immediately followed with the filming of “Delicious Relationship”. Once again, it is adapted from a Japanese manga. Delicious Relationship has previously been made in Japan with 中山美穗 and 唐澤秀明. Zai plays a talented chef, who gradually fell in love with a newcomer (played by Patty Hou) through endless arguments and confrontations. Zai went through a month’s special cooking lessons. Just like taking motorbike driving lessons for MARS, the training and his strong sense of curiosity renewed his enthusiasm and vigour. To be able to work with familiar colleagues such as Megan Lai and Alan Ke, must also have been one of the reasons that Zai accepted this work.
I’m 25 now, my thinking on a lot of things has changed. I hope to be able to set higher standards to work towards vigorously.
With Delicious Relationship, we’re sure Zai will be able to transform the pressure that comes with growing older into motivation for his acting.
第五章 銀幕中的未來 Chapter 5: The Future On-Screen
Vic Chou has spent 5 years in the entertainment business, and has amassed several works for his portfolio. One suddenly realizes Vic is actually sprinting through his actor life with great speed. However, Zai always kept a careful attitude towards acting in movies. Other F4 members have already had movie projects in 2003 and 2004. Zai also considered the possibilities of making movies, however he came to the conclusion that “I like acting, but the demands on acting is even higher with big-screen movies. I can’t just make any movie without the right amount of preparation and I think I should wait”.
Zai’s careful consideration and attitude is a little surprising considering his own personality. It was a high point for F4’s popularity, but Zai’s positioning of himself as an actor without enough experience was right on.
Alas, Zai was going to make a movie amidst his careful and calm attitude. Zai’s first movie (previously known as “Linger”) is about a spirit who continues to protect his loved one after his death, a Chinese version of the hit movie “Ghost”. The director is Johnny To, who has had much success with macho movies like 槍火, PTU, Muscle Monk, etc, and who is considered the successor to John Wu’s success in Hollywood.
Director To had much success with gangster movies, but he also directed love stories like 向左走, 向右走. His idol is Japanese director 黑澤明, and he also said his work is movies and his hobby is also movies. He’s well known for his passion for movies and his demanding attitude. Director To once said that “singers have low awareness as an actor. I don’t want to use singers to make movies”. However Director To also had high regard for Andy Lau’s acting. Maybe it can be taken to mean Director To considers Zai as a new generation Andy Lau, that’s why he chose Zai out of the many actors that have come on the scene.
Director To and Zai first met in HK in Dec 2004 at the Pepsi promotional event. After that meeting, talks about movie corroboration ensued. However, filming was actually delayed until August 2006 (original article erroneously written August 2005). Zai had to speed up the filming of Delicious Relationship.
The female lead in the movie is Li Bing Bing, who was once rumored to be dating Ken Chu, and who has been reported to try to get close to Zai on the set. With a cast like this, how would it affect Zai’s acting, this is a bit worrisome. However, these worries are probably going to be redundant, because the current Zai already has set specific goals for his acting career. Zai’s charisma and presence as an actor have substantially increased. The fulfilling time spent with his loved ones, the remembrances of a friend who has past away, the love and tragic happenings in real life must be nourishment for his development in acting, enabling him to become more mature. So where would Zai’s footstep in the movie world end up, Prince Charming is king in the world of movies. The imagination of a future like this is very much desired.
周渝民的音樂世界 The Music World of Vic Chou
Every girl must have dreamt about her Prince Charming. Probably no one can deny Vic fits the description. Not only is he our prince charming, he’s successful in his acting career, and in terms of singing, he also has that rare beautiful voice.
Everyone in Japan who has seen the PARCO ads knows Vic Chou of F4. What else can we say except that he became a superstar after MG’s Hua Ze Lei. In fact, his music is also very pleasing to the ears.
Vic’s Natural Talent: a soothing and gentle voice that brings out more markedly his princely charm
On listening to Meteor Rain for the first time, the first line was sung by Zai. Subconsciously I wondered, “is this really up to it”? In F4’s album, there were songs with all four of them, there were duets, and they each had solo numbers. When I listened to their album, I didn’t really consider their singing technique, I simply thought Zai’s voice was very gentle and soothing. To be honest, I was initially attracted by Vanness’ voice. After all, a prince with a nice voice may give people a strange feeling, no matter that the person has a voice comparable to Il Divo, it would still seem incompatible.
Zai was the first F4 member to release his solo album. Of course, it cannot be denied that Zai was very popular at the time. However, the producer must have felt like being hit by lightning when he first heard Zai’s voice. Although his voice sounded young and unskilled, we can feel in his voice his natural talent in singing.
Zai’s 1st Solo Album: simple melodies like precious gems... mainstream pop music
His first album “Make a wish”, was a fine production in the traditional Chinese pop music style. There were no deliberate surprises, with melancholy melodies and easy to pick up choruses. It was as if one can easily follow the tunes and sing along, and Zai’s voice!! If it weren’t for Zai’s voice, the songs would have been the same. Listening to his voice, one can forget their worries, feel in harmony, fantasize yet with a tweak of danger. This is a talent that only a prince has.
The album also included theme songs from Poor Prince and Come to My Place. The fans of the drama series should be quite delighted. Although I was slightly worried by Zai in Meteor Rain, in Make a Wish, he distinctly demonstrated his strength. His singing was very natural and smooth. He was especially good in the 7th track “Loving You”. Even if one were not interested in F4, for anyone who has any interest in Mandarin pop, this album is highly recommended.
The 2nd solo album that fans have been waiting for - filled with a bit of maturity
Two years after the release of his first album, Zai made his 2nd album “Remember I Love You”. Zai once wondered for how long he will continue to be referred to as ZaiZai. On listening to his second album, one can’t help but think, it’s finally time for Zai to turn into a man. Although the melancholy and romantic style of the 2nd album is similar to the first, it gives listeners an entirely different feeling. Maybe during the wait for the 2nd album, Zai has acted in a variety of drama series. Acting in different roles during the two years between releasing his first and second albums have extended the limits in his acting, and may have had the same effect on his singing.
There was only one song in this album that was in the style of the nostalgic Taiwan pop style. The entire album was closer to the contemporary Taiwan music trend. The 10th track “I Feel You” is especially good. His sotto voce was terrific. It must be Zai’s charm. There are other lighter livelier songs that could drum up the atmosphere in concerts, and there are other slower romantic numbers. The melodies for the slow songs are very charming, and especially with Zai’s voice and interpretation, one can feel the sadness, and the singing that is becoming more fluid, is also very comforting and relaxing to listen to.
I consciously tried not to watch the DVD, but not being able to stop myself, I watched it and found that Zai’s princely aura was unstoppable. It was like opening Pandora’s box. It reminded me of a message I once saw on a Chinese website: there is a basketball player in the next class, who looks like Jay Chou. But I’ve never seen or met anyone who can look like Zai. I can appreciate how she feels.
The Transformation of Prince Charming: The sex appeal demonstrated in his concert performance
Zai’s steady character showed itself in his solo albums. So what would it be like in live concert performances? In his first concert, he came on stage in what cannot be a princelier image. I’m sure all the fans can remember vividly the person in the white overcoat. On a Japanese fan website, someone asked, “Doesn’t he feel hot dressed in that coat?” But for those fans who visited that website, they maybe tempted to say “because Zai is a prince, he will not perspire” and would never thought that there was anything wrong with the way he dressed.
Zai surprised everyone with his improvement and how far he has come at the 2006 concert by showing different sides. First of all, there was magic during his first solo part, and staged a Cinderella-like show. Not only that, he kissed the dancer who was the princess. The audience went into a frenzy. In the second solo part, Zai took off his jacket and slowly unbuttoned his shirt, one cannot help but swallow on seeing the sexy performance. What’s happened to the Prince Charming? One feels deeply the extent that Zai has matured on seeing the seductive performance. And the guitar that was used as a prop in one of his MVs, he actually played it during the concert. As a performer, he has really come a long way and improved a lot.
Zai did a couple of songs originally sang by his idol Andy Lau. He chose a couple of earlier works that is reflective of early Hong Kong pop. Even Andy Lau’s fans wondered why Zai chose those songs - aren’t there other better ones, they wondered. "I actually prefer Andy Lau’s earlier works, amongst other things, the singing is stronger, and it’s uniquely Andy Lau, very special for Hong Kong."
Zai must have looked forward to the Andy Lau he's watched on TV since he was young. In earlier interviews, Zai always mentioned that he respected Andy for his attitude towards his fans, and his dedication to movie making. Besides, Andy is probably the only person who has not lost his star quality after many years in the business and who can give great live performances on stage. He would be a good example for Zai. One cannot help but overlap Zai's and Andy’s performances. Andy is talented and works very hard, no one can easily replicate his achievements. However, considering the originals of art started with imitation, it is hoped that Zai can learn even more from Andy Lau, and become a legend in the years to come.
There aren’t many people who can keep us young at heart. We should thank Zai for bringing us dreams and happiness, while we listen to his albums, and experience for a while a daydreaming young girl. The increasingly sexy Zai, what else is he going to bring to us, this really makes us long for the release of his next album.
在綜藝節目背後的笑容中所看到的仔仔的純真真實的一面 The Innocent and Genuine Sides of Zai that we see from the smiles behind the scenes of entertainment variety shows
Vic is active whether as actor or singer, sometimes graceful and smart, other times melancholy. However, through variety entertainment shows, we are able to see another side of Zai that is totally different. What is Zai like at his most relaxed - unconscious of the presence of cameras, showing his humor in a care-free way?
Shy Expressions and Non-Stop Jokes: Light-Hearted Moments with F3
Vic Chou continually refined his talent as an actor through drama works like MARS and SILENCE, and mesmerised his fans with his exquisite voice in F4 concerts. With his outstanding looks and physique, his expressions and mannerisms awaken the subconscious maternal instincts of female fans to want to protect him. It is entirely justifiable to say that Zai is the most suited to being called a prince amongst current stars. To say this, one must not forget another important attribute, that of his humor, and variety shows can show all of Zai’s unique characteristics to fans all at once.
In F4’s ABCDEF4, we see a genuinely relaxed Zai, because he was working with F3, whom he is most familiar. When we see Zai picking up a doll in the studio and say jokingly: “Don’t get fresh with me, I’m a girl!”, he was as natural as if he has come to a friend’s place to have some fun. In the same program, during the “visit Yilan” unit, it was as if he was going home visiting relatives rather than working. There was a comfortable, warm and relaxed atmosphere from start to finish. However there was also a professional side to this. When he tried the “crystal dates” he unhesitantly said, “there’s an ice-cool feel, one bite and the mouth is filled with juice”, spoken like a gastronome - one cannot help but admire him.
In Meteor Dreamland, again with F4, during the section where he re-enacted famous scenes from Meteor Garden with fans, the shy Zai makes us smile with understanding. When he and the fans reproduced the Lei and Shancai kissing on the beach scene, although a professional actor, he was still extremely embarrassed. Sometimes he would be hit by Ah Ya and Huang Jia Qian (the show’s hostesses) with their “amplifier”, or “hit" by fans, teased endlessly.
In another section about fulfilling fans’ hopes, when he went to a fan’s workplace unannounced, lightly touching her shoulder and asked “are you alright”, and tried to cheer her up with “don’t be discouraged in light of hardship”; even though he’s a star, the way he treated fans like an adored fellow student, made people’s favorable impression of him soar to an even higher level.
Co-Starring with Barbie Hsu, one sees a happy and contented Zai showing his real emotions
Zai’s first solo variety show was Fun Fan Run, the sport variety show filmed concurrently with MARS. Because motorbike riding was one of the areas to practice for the role in MARS, although he was a bit scared the first time riding the motorbike, he still diligently challenged every aspect of the difficult special training, including riding on bumpy terraine. With his never-give-up attitude and working hard to overcome difficulties in things he’s not good at, such as cooking, he relied on his natural athletic genes to pick up motorbike riding with ease, just like a prince on a galloping stallion.
During the filming of MARS in the severe cold weather in Sendai, seeing him bolstering the morale of the 300 temporary actors with an amplifier in one hand, many would feel that he is a prince who is broadminded, and who treats people with warmth and sincerity.
Besides the increase in solo activities such as releasing his album and starring in drama series, he was also invited as guest of different variety shows: the first being the popular “Yu Le Bai Fen Bai” (Entertainment 100%), hosted by his Meteor Garden co-star Barbie Hsu and her sister Xiao S. Because the three of them kept contact both on and off-screen, Zai was able to be less inhibited and showed a side of him that was different from his normal shy self. However he reverted to being the hesitant and nervous Zai when he was asked to demonstrate the dance steps in Meteor Rain, or when he saw his own face filling up entire screens during news of his drama series “Poor Prince”. Maybe he still felt a bit uneasy when he’s not with F3, who are like his brothers.
However, in Kang Xi Lai Le, a show hosted by Xiao S and Cai Kang Yong, although Zai still appeared shy, he was bursting with laughter at Xiao S’s endless witty remarks and his secrets were revealed by his 3 friends who appeared on the show as special guests.
The pleased-with-himself expression for completing tongue twisters that he is least good at, being talkative when discussing his game of acting out hypothetical scenes with his friends, making funny faces that make people forget he’s actually a good looking guy, all made us forget he is a shy big kid.
Other than these shows, Zai also appeared in Ke Mi Kids (可米小子) and Guo Shi Lun’s (郭世綸) adventure show (惡童探險記). On the show, he took care of the younger Ke Mi members, and at the same time, was scared by the non-stop unexpected incidents, he was like an “un-awe-inspiring” elder brother. But this is one of the charms of Zai, much respected by the younger Ke Mi members. Showing his true self without any defences, he transforms all kinds of emotions into part of the charisma that belongs to him. These sides of him that we hardly see in drama series or his concert appearances, are worth seeing even for non-Zai fans, to experience the different sides of the charismatic Zaizai.
周渝民語錄~從工作上及生活中所看到的王子的真實面~ The Words of Vic Chou: the genuine side of prince charming seen through his work and life
The lucky young man, who lives life at his own pace, doted on as the youngest member of F4, accumulating experience and results in his performing career: is what we see the real Zai? Let’s gather some of the things he has said about his work and private life, in search of the real Zai.
Part 1: On work
Because it wasn’t what I had expected, I was completely unprepared for it.
- from “What’s In Pictorial A, Vol. 1” - on the situation after the broadcast of Meteor Garden
A student who grew up in rural Yilan, northeastern part of Taiwan, discovered while accompanying a friend to an audition, and went on to become a performer himself; the first drama series immediately becoming a blockbuster. As a young man who instantly became a super idol, of course he needs time to sort out his emotions in order to get a grip on the situation, especially when he has to consider his studies at the same time. Even under these difficult conditions, he treaded on with determination, putting total effort into his work and career. This is why he is able to continue to accumulate his popularity.
Mentally or physically, one has to have unwavering determination, and work hard no matter what.
- from “Asian Cinema & TV Life, Vol. 2” - on the essential attributes of being an actor
When he first started out, he was still a student, his schedule in his daily life was fully packed. After all, this was just an ordinary person, also a shy person. But no matter what kind of personality, even in student life, he is still considered a star by people around him. In the following series which he starred in, the comedy drama “Poor Prince”, he challenged kissing a person of the same sex, and dressing as a maid. After these tests, Zai found the “actor” side of himself.
I think Ling has become my outlook on life, and has also become a part of me.
- from “Taiwan TV and Stars, Vol. 1” - on his role in MARS
The turning point in actor Vic Chou’s career was the drama series “MARS”. The first time he had to play two characters, with intricate and complex emotions. He accepted countless suggestions from the director on his acting, and at the same time completing the promotion of his second solo album in the quickest time, so that he can concentrate his efforts on studying the roles he has to play. Through such hard work, he showed his acting skills with vivid and true to life portrayal as if overlapping himself and the characters in the series. Apparently, even after filming wrapped up, Zai was still unable to withdraw from the characters in the series, reaching the ultimate state of what only actors can experience.
You have to take into consideration the image of the character and the standard of acting demanded by the director and producer.
- from “Asian Wave, Vol. 5” - on building up a character
Ever since MARS, Zai has become more interested in acting. He is beginning to collaborate with his fellow workers to complete his character buildup. This shows that he is a good actor who is highly adaptable and can bring out different acting skills through the current character his is playing. When he worked with Pu En Hui, they communicated in English. The result of their exchange on SILENCE is clear. Zai who works hard for his career, is probably no longer shy.
My main occupation would still be an actor. I think this suits me more than being a singer.
- from “Taiwan Drama & Cinema Live, Vol. 1" - on his occupation
Zai has 2 albums as a member of F4 and 2 solo albums. As a singer, he also commands people’s attention. Despite this, Zai says without hesitation that acting would still be the principal focal point in his work. He has received continuous invitations to take part in drama series and movies. After finishing filming of Delicious Relationship, he’s filming his first movie "Linger”. As he said: “I hope I’ll be able to play roles with complicated and complex emotions”; and so similarly, in terms of what he will be able to bring to us on screen, there is increasingly more to anticipate and look forward to.
Part 2: On his private life
To be able to stay at home quietly, is the ideal life style that I long for.
- from "Cinem@rt, Vol. 5" - on everyday life when not working
As an artist, one must be able to concentrate and complete the work even when chased by cameras or people. So of course when an artist is not working, he would want to be able to relax completely. Although among movie stars, many would choose to go abroad quietly for vacation, for Zai, the best place to relax is his own home. The place he loves the most, and at a pace of his choosing, is probably the best way to relax. Maybe for Zai, who grew up in rural area, the only way that he can relax, is when he can completely be himself and get in touch with his innermost self.
Because we don’t know one another’s identity, we are able to say whatever we have in mind without reservation.
- from "Taiwan Star Interview, Vol. 1" - on his lifestyle at home
For Zai who likes to stay at home, he is also known to love the computer, especially playing internet games. When he’s chatting on line, it has been said that he would also ask his cyber-friends questions about F4. Because he can exchange ideas freely in the cyber-space without disclosing his true identity, the cyber-world may have become an important place for Zai. According to Zai’s friends, he is also very popular in the virtual reality, since even there his normal self comes through clearly.
To be deceived is most upsetting, and once I know the other person has deceived me, I would not be able to get along with the person like we used to.
- from "Flix Asia, Vol. 2" - on friendship and relationships
The most painful thing to Zai after he suddenly became a star must be the fact that he is no longer able to talk with people freely without reservation. Because of this, as a matter of principle, he continues to treat those with whom he’s built a relationship on mutual trust with honesty. Up to now, Zai still keeps contact with his friends from home through email or chatting on the internet. Even after he became famous, there is no change in the way he and his friends from home treat one another, without secrets or lies. This is probably a prerequisite of the happiness he seeks.
I don’t want my family and friends to be disturbed or harassed because of me so I try not to talk about them in public.
- from "Hua Liu Star Now, Vol. 4" - on family and friends
Zai treasures his home and family, that’s probably why he chose to film his DVD “F4 Film Collection - Vic Chou” in his birth place, YiLan, of all places. However, he has always tried his best to shield the people he loves and treasures from having their pictures taken by the media.
He has always been thankful of his hometown and their people, this is the best evidence that he has never forgotten his origins.
I like females with individual style. Girls who are too beautiful will be too popular and not reassuring.
- from "Flix Asia, Vol. 2" - on the types of girls that he likes
Zai and Barbie Xu are now a couple. Most stars and idols are evasive about their love life. Zai is the opposite. He is honest and forthright about the relationship. Through their collaboration in “Meteor Garden” and “MARS”, Zai found that he is comfortable and can be himself when they are together. Zai showed his manly strength of character in acknowledging Barbie and the relationship, now the couple is considered by fans and media to be the best couple.
Despite being a shy kid growing up in the countryside, who has become a star all over Asia including Japan, Zai does not cling to his fame or status. He goes out for movies with his girlfriend, etc, enjoying his dating like any ordinary people would. This uniqueness is Zai’s greatest charm. This is evident not only from fans but from the favorable impression that even the media has for Zai. Whatever people may say, Zai is the prince charming who has everyone’s love and affection.
人們為什麼會被仔仔吸引?從共事人員的看法所得知的四種魅力 Why are people attracted to Zai? The 4 types of charm as seen by his co-workers
The youngest of F4 - Vic Chou. Why would people be so attracted to him? We can see some of the reasons from how he is viewed by the people around him. Let us unlock the puzzle with four key terms.
Keyword 1 - Industrious
Vic Chou entered the entertainment world with Meteor Garden, he accompanied a friend to an audition for MG and got signed on himself. For someone who enthusiastically works hard on every project he’s involved in as an actor or artist, people around him thinks of him as a hard-worker.
Firstly, Chai Zhi Ping, producer of Meteor Garden who has worked with him since the beginning of his career, said: "Zai likes to challenge different roles, and he always manages to choose the role that is most suited to him and brings out the best of his form and condition at the time." (from Asian Wave, Vol. 5)
Barbie Xu, co-star of MARS said: "MARS is the third time we worked together. In this series, Zai has matured not only in his appearance, but also his character and acting" (from press conference in Japan during March 2005)
Zai’s co-star in SILENCE, Wang Quan Yi said: "I am most impressed by Zai’s acting as he is able to convey his feelings through his eyes." (from Asian Wave, Vol. 5)
They all have very high regard for the actor Vic Chou.
In addition, on Zai’s marvelous and sexy performance during the F4 concerts in Hong Kong in March 2006, Ken Chu said with praise: When I first met Zai, he was like a kid, now he is already a mature man.
If Zai was just a “lucky kid”, he wouldn’t be as active in the entertainment world as he is today. He is a man who is gradually bringing out his talent and potential through his hard working attitude.
Keyword 2: Innocent and Unaffected
Zai is hardworking in terms of his profession, but what about after work?
Barbie Xu had this to say about Zai during a press conference in Japan in March 2005 (this was before they became a couple): "Zai is adorable like a kid. We hit it off well from the beginning. We are close friends, like brother and sister."
Chai Zhi Ping said during another press conference in Japan in June 2006: "One cannot help but want to protect him."
Patty Hou, costar in Delicious Relationship, said: "Zai is very approachable and adorable." (from Hua Liu Star Now, Vol. 3)
Women consistently think Zai is adorable. What about from the male angle? F4 members are considered close colleagues and one of them had once said that “Zai always manages to make us very happy, he is like a younger brother to us.” (from Hua Liu Wave II)
To Xiu Jie Kai, Zai’s costar in MARS: "Zai is very lovable, very playful and naughty." (from Taiwan TV Drama, Vol. 2)
Jay Chou once mentioned that, “Zai is really cute, you only need to look at him to feel your spirits lift.” (from Hua Liu Wave II)
From all indications, we all think Zai is the “adorable kid brother”. This is the Zai charm that manages to attract and mesmerize everyone who has seen or met him. It is not unreasonable to say that being innocent and unaffected are the special attributes of being the youngest. Maybe because of this, even though Zai is now a mature young man, he is still affectionately referred to as “ZaiZai”.
Keyword 3: Bashful
Zai makes a deep impression on people with his innocent and unaffected demeanour, but most people’s first impression of him is his bashfulness. Even Barbie Xu and her sister Xiao S think that Zai is too introverted. (from Hua Liu Wave II).
During a press showing of SILENCE in Shanghai in June 2006, Megan Lai (who has collaborated with Zai on many drama series) said of an unexpected side of Zai (who had just mentioned that he was becoming better at acting and expressing emotions with his eyes): "Normally, he doesn’t even look straight at girls."
Sammi Cheng, who costarred with Jerry Yan in Magic Kitchen: When we first met, Zai would just sit there quietly not saying much. He’s a silent person. (from All about F4! F4 Bible) Apparently it was Zai’s introvert quality that gave her a deep impression.
Seems like Zai is shy even with guys. Andy Hui, costar in Silence once said: “Zai is basically very quiet.” (from Cinem@rt, Vol. 4)
According to Xiu Jie Kai, a good friend off-screen: “Both Zai and I are quite shy, and rather than going to noisy and exciting places, we prefer to go somewhere quiet and chat.” (from Taiwan TV Drama, Vol. 2)
Chai Zhi Ping said during a Japanese press conference in October 2006 that her impression of Zai is his shy and melancholic expression; and this was why she decided to explore his potential and give him the important role of Hua Ze Lei in Meteor Garden.
Keyword 4: Individualistic
Just as Zai once said, he hates to be forced to do something he doesn’t want to do, so he has quite an individualistic way of doing things. We can see from Vanness’ comment that “it’s endless laughter with Zai around” (Star Asia, Vol. 1); or Zai’s co-workers all “being unconsciously influenced by him, so now we all seem to be “poisoned” by Zai and even the way we talk becomes weird (like the way Zai talks)” (from Hua Liu Wave II), that Zai’s uniquely individualistic style brings a lot of laughter to people around him.
In addition to this, sometimes we get the impression that he hates inconveniences. Ken Chu once said: “Zai often eats simple, instant type foods after work when he’s hungry. When he found out I normally don’t eat out but cook for myself, he calls me so I had to invite him over.” (from Taiwan TV Drama, Vol.1)
A friend who helps Zai to clean up his room divulged some embarrassing tidbits in his private life on an entertainment variety show: “When he is at home, Zai wears only his shorts, and socks.”
Zai’s “do things his own way regardless of what other people do” character is neither good nor bad but it is probably a special attribute of persons who are the youngest in the family/group. People around him are just unable to ignore him.
=================================================================
Different people have different impressions of Vic Chou, who has an expressive face. In one instant, one sees his serious side, and then the next, one finds his try-to-avoid-hassle or slightly childlike sides. He is a person full of conflicting characteristics and charms. His hard to pin down elusive personality, makes not only the other members of F4 but all the people around him love him like a kid brother, and bring out the subconscious maternal instincts of all the females in this world to want to protect him. Zai’s charisma makes people love him affectionately which can probably be said to be one of the star qualities.
