My Personal Review
Vic Chou: Taipei & Tokyo
4Faces
After hours of admiring 4Faces and chatting with friends (specifically tigerlily_kaye and aninie) about the photobook, here are my first impressions:
Natural Face (in Taiwan) --> The photographer definitely captured ZaiZai's playful personality! He’s just uber-cute! His casual clothes also complement the playful and natural theme. Even if ZaiZai's Natural Face is the one generally and often seen, I love the fact that each photo was still able to present a fresh side of ZaiZai's Natural Face.
Cool Face (in Taiwan) --> I love his hairstyle here! The uneven cut and the color of his hair added to the “cool” factor. His languid poses wearing the white polo shirt inside the room epitomize an innocent coolness. It’s as if he is unaware of the effect of his poses. This is in contrast with the 2nd batch of photos taken outside where he was wearing a black blazer over a white top. In this batch, he is very much aware of the coolness he exudes in the photos. I love the photo where he was holding his blazer open and the last photo taken on top of a building. His facial expressions are just so striking.
Stylish Face (in Tokyo) --> The effects in the photos, where he was wearing a bandanna, have “The Matrix” effect. The photos look so cutting-edge. While the photos, where he was wearing the green jacket and the red striped shirt, are so cosmopolitan. Hence, the Tokyo background is so apt for this batch of pictures.
Note: The Thai texts in the pictures were added by chou-tuay.
Fashionable Face (in Tokyo) --> Among the 4 themes, this is my personal favorite. It’s very artistic. Not a lot of artists could pull this off but ZaiZai definitely did. The theme is actually very risky because it borders between being too-OA (over-acting) or too-corny. But ZaiZai (and the photographer) carried it very, very well. Especially the last picture!
Thanks to chou-tuay of zzc/vicpower-th & salla of vicpower for the scanned pictures and creations.
This photobook is definitely a milestone for ZaiZai. Unlike other photobooks that show what the public already knows about a certain celebrity, 4Faces actually shows a new side of ZaiZai. Even the natural style has something new for the public.
One thing I admire about ZaiZai is his effortless way of capturing the different emotions required in each scene or picture. The 4 themes optimize such ability. Adding ZaiZai's chiseled looks and expressive face, the result is more than spectacular.
