Chapter 9

Ring…Ring…Ri-

“Ok asshole, you have called SIXTEEN times within the past three hours! Did it ever occur to you that I may be flirting, or making out, or maybe even getting laid!...You ruined my se-“

“I’m looking for Cheeks?”

“…WELL YOU FOUND HIM!”

“Oh…uh…this is Kris…Kris Allen? Tommy said I should call you about an inside job? I can pay you anything you want.”

Kris was met with silence and some shuffling noise. Should I hang up and try again? “Tommy…Tommy Joe? Blonde hair, short stature, closet version of me?”

“Brad, you’re an asshole!”

“Ah Thomas! Yes, I know the man!” Kris could hear the smirk on the other end of the receiver. Tommy snatched the phone out of Kris’ hand, blushing deeply while he explained the situation to Brad. “So…I get close to Adam? Is that it?...bitch please, I could do that in my sleep!” Kris couldn’t suppress the giggle that came out of his mouth and the look of shock and confusion on Tommy’s face from his unusual laughter, and it erupted more giggles from him. “Yeah,” Tommy sighed, “We just need you to get close to Adam…Maybe even Lucé too. We have got to find a way to get Adam away from that man.”

“Alright, I’m in. I’ll meet up with you throughout the week so when he comes back from his honeymoon we can make our move.”

“Thanks so much.” Kris was thrilled to hear that someone else would be helping him in his rescue mission.

“You’re welcome sweetheart, but don’t ever call me like that again or you will make up for the dick I miss out on.”

Campus. Solitude. Alone.

It feels nice to be here again. No one bothers me so it’s easier to think.

Lucé continued to be nice during the entire honeymoon, minus the one night, and Adam wasn’t able to get any answers as to why. It had been eating at him for a long while now and he began to think he would never get answers. Maybe…maybe he really does. Maybe I’m worthy now…Maybe he lov-

“Hey Adam!” Kris was full on sprinting towards a wide eyed Adam, who looked about ready to claw up the brick wall he was leaning on. Kris was followed by Allison and Tommy.

Allison he knew. She was in class with him and always tried to speak to him, even if he rejected her. Tommy, however, he didn’t know well at all. He knew he had music classes with him, but the boy usually kept to himself most of the time; just like he did.

“Hey man, what’s up?” Kris settled his arm on Adam’s bicep and almost drooled as he ogled the man, acting like he was one of the school girls. Adam opened and closed his mouth repeatedly, gaping like a fish at the three in front of him. He shook his head to clear it and ran a hand through his hair. He had wanted it cut but every time Lucé took him to the barber they only cut the tips off. “…Hello? Adam?” Adam realized he was spacing and focused again. His eyes darted all over the campus, searching for his husband’s eyes. He wasn’t allowed to do this. Talking to others was forbidden.

Well…he’s been breaking the rules…maybe…maybe I can, too.

He gathered up all the courage he had left and grabbed Kris’ arm and dragged him down the brick hall towards a set of classrooms. He didn’t enter any of the classrooms but inched against the wall until on the other side of the hallway. He peered over the edge of bricks and saw the entrance to the campus. It was totally deserted.

Good.

Adam waved the others towards him and bolted towards the campus entrance. His long legs were flying forward, and they pulled closer and closer to the brick walls of his prison. He slipped past the stone pillars, turned a sharp left, and then kept running down the sidewalk, not looking to see if he was followed.

He rounded another corner and then sped up, running until he had to slow down to catch his breath though he still continued to move quickly. He finally stopped in front of a gate, undid a pad lock with a silver key and gently pushed it until it opened. He slipped inside and waited. He waited a long while, counting the minutes in his head. Finally, after eleven minutes, Tommy pushed open the gate further and stepped in. He crouched down next to Adam and sat quietly. They waited in silence until the others made it into the new space and the door was sealed shut again by Allison. When the three of them looked around, they were all in shock.

The room was small , but looked enormous. Growing up the sides were flowers of bright purples, hot pinks and blues. Rose bushes lined the walls and different foliage were scattered about, making the room into a small fortress. The ceiling was glass and allowed light to flow into the room, though, most of it was blocked by the plants that soaked up the sun’s rays. Small beams were cast upon the ground and on the faces of the three, but not the blue eyed angel. He sat under the branches of a winding tree, keeping himself guarded as best as he could.

This place…it must be his. He’s letting us in physically but he has to know how dangerous it is. This is his hiding place. He’s letting us into his sanctuary.

“Adam…This place, do you take care of it all?” Adam looked over the small man a couple of times, sizing he and his question up and slowly nodded. His eyes were a faint blue color. His collar’s diamonds were mostly dim while he sat in the shadows, only shining when he nodded and the rays of light reflected off of them. “This…This is beautiful. You take care of this place, don’t you?” Again, he was met with a nod.

“L-Lucé…H-he doesn’t k-know it’s h-here. That i-it’s mine.” Adam began to shake, now aware of how much he had let Kris in. This boy he didn’t even know.

But something tells me he’ll help me understand. He can explain things to me.

Allison dared to inch towards Adam and sat down next to him, pulling her skirt to keep as much dirt out as possible. She laid her arm around Adam’s trembling shoulders and enveloped in a hug. “This place must mean a lot to you…It…Was it a gift?” Adam began to nod at her first question but froze in mid nod at the second. Images flashed in his eyes, distant memories of so long ago.

“M-My mother…S-she gave i-it to me…” A silent tear traveled down his cheek, the leader of many more that would follow after as if they could catch their leader.

“S-she’s gone n-now.”

The memories of his mother became too much, and he broke down, curling in on himself as six arms wrapped around him, shielding him from the hate, despair and brokenness of his world. He sat there for what seemed like hours, sobbing, pleading for the return of his mother, until there was no more strength to cry. He sat still, hiccupping instead. Red rimmed eyes looking in between the three people who did not hurt him for crying, did not run and share his secret, who chased after him to get to his sanctuary. He searched deep into their eyes, as if he could see into their very souls and sniffled a bit. Sitting there watching, he felt his limbs grow heavy, his eye lids sink and his posture slump. He was sinking into exhaustion.

He pulled out his phone and sent a text to his husband, saying he was going to stay out at a hotel that night. After getting an odd approval text from his man he let his body drift in and out. His head laid in Allison’s lap as she played, not tugged on his hair. Tommy’s hand rubbing his lower back after settling next to Adam’s curled knees. His hands in Kris’ as calloused fingers caress the backs of his hands.

I can trust these people. I’m not sure why…but I know I can…

And with that Adam fell into a deep slumber; dreaming of happier places and unspoken dreams becoming realities. For the first time in thirteen years, he fell asleep next to people who loved him and cherished him. And watching him sleep they too slowly drifted until all of them were asleep. Wrapped in the arms of each other in sleep, they knew they would be ok.

And a small smile graced everyone’s lips.
