2008 Music Recap, Day 3: I’m Chuck Bass (drum)

Dec 04, 2008 00:17

When considering a recap of my favorite music from this year-something I hadn’t done since 2005, The Last Great Year Of Indie Rock-it popped into my head that I should compile 31 songs and write about one a day for the whole of December. The list already existed in my iTunes, as I’d been keeping a playlist entitled “Good Music 2008” since May. All ( Read more... )

Is a pun still a pun if it doesn't work when you read it or say it out loud?

I think so; however, i also think the best puns are those that you don't see coming. Those for which take you a second to get..."huh?.... OH SNAP!" You know, there's that second of recognition, where the pun-tension builds. It can be done in text, though it definitely translates better in audio. I respect a cheesy pun also. so kudos.

Was 2005 the Last Great Year Of Indie Rock?

Yes, because it was the last year before blogs took over.

I'm sure this is supposed to be self-evident, but...

How did blogs ruin indie music?

Was it their over-saturating the already saturated?

Of course, these are growing into consensus opinions … myfriendedward December 4 2008, 16:55:28 UTC
That, plus accelerating the hype cycle (bands getting too big too fast, a la Vampire Weekend and Black Kids) and solidifying consensus. You'd think that more people having the outlet to express their opinion would allow for more varied view points, but since music blogs blew up, it would seem that most people just tow the line.

So blogs haven't necessarily ruined indie music, per se, rather they've re-shaped the way we discover that music and severely shortened the time span in which a musical act is allowed to develop.

I saw that in a store a couple weeks ago, but at present it's hard for me to read science-y stuff for leisure since my work requires me to do it so much. But, I imagine this book is going to make me want to stand up on whatever table is nearest to me and start preaching the mystic nuances of music's effects on the soul, and how SCIENCE CAN'T EXPLAIN EVERYTHING even though that may not be true.

This also sounds like a good thing to do over long islands.

i've somehow managed to avoid ever hearing umbrella, but the drum beat is exactly the same as a garageband drum loop. As in, i'm not sure they didn't use a garageband loop as the drum track.
