Points to ponder

Mar 11, 2005 18:39

A thought occured to me a few days ago whilst I was thnking about one of my fanfics, and I thought I'd turn it into a 'Points to Ponder' column (along with the Character insights column that I've not forgotten about, by the way). So here it is:

In 'Chamber of Secrets' (the book), how did Draco know that it was Ginny that had sent Harry the ( Read more... )

You've definitely caught my attention there. To be honest there are so many little things within cannon that you can read into regarding relationships. I know this isn't what you are trying to do, but I certainly agree with the Lucius not being as evil as we all think.

Concerning Lucius telling Draco to keep an eye on Ginny, maybe it was due to her first year. Perhaps he was curious to see how Ginny had managed to survive being possessed by Tom Riddle, and whether or not it had affected her in the long term. Perhaps that is how he found out it was Ginny who sent Harry the singing valentine. On the other hand it could be a leap of faith like you said.

Hmm, you've really got me thinking now!

The events of CoS took place in Ginny's first year. When Malfoy taunted Ginny, the events of the Chamber had not yet taken place, so if Draco was watching Ginny for the effects of the possession, then that would imply a high degrre of involvement would it not? Which is refuted by what Draco says to Crabbe and Goyle (Harry and Ron) in the Polyjuice scene ( ... )

Hmm, so he either knew that Ginny was responsible for the attacks, or he had his suspicions.

Now that I'd love to happen! In a way I'm one of those people who believes that everyone does something for a reason, and I've always had a weakness regarding the Malfoy men. Perhaps he was working for the order. It makes sense. And all of the evidence does indeed point towards that. Of course there is also the way Draco has never once mentioned the Chamber of Secrets to Ginny. If he was so evil as he's supposed to be, then wouldn't he have taken any oppurtunity possible to hurt her with it? After all it was something that scarred her deeply. I know if I hated the Weasley's as much as Draco does, I'd make sure to use my enemies weaknesses and exploit them.

Let's hope JK never hears about these musings. She'd likely smite us to death! lol.

But that is the point, I don't think Draco IS evil. He's bratty and a bully but if you read Mynuet's essay over at FIA, she makes some interesting points about the way Malfoy behaves sometimes.

JKR would be welcome to smite me. I'm not ashamed of my theories and I'd love it if she stepped in and personally debunked them because then that would mean we learn something concrete.

I've read mynuets essay, which was wonderfull written (no surprise there!) and I agreed with a lot of what she said. He is a bully, but then again he's been brought up to think like that, so it's not really surprising.

Yeah, but I don't think we'll learn the true knowledge of what goes on until we read the 7th book. And even then there will always be questions.

Another completely unrelated question here, but I was wondering if you accept beta jobs? I'm in desperate need of sorting out my fics, and my own beta is pregnant. My grammar isn't too bad, but I need to work on little things such as time scales and whatnot. I understand if you have time issues, and I will only b sending you what I've written so far, which is about five chapter, and then I've got AS Levels so I'll be busy revising.

I don't have much time either, what with my job and my own fics, and my Grammar is terrible (just ask Mynuet! LOL), but I am happy to help you sort out syntax and timelines and the suchlike, so g-mail it over. Vequihellin[at]Gmail[dot]com

I am sure Snape told Draco to use that 'Serpensortia' spell so that Harry would discover his Parseltongue ability.

I'm completely confused. How would Snape have any idea that Harry was a parseltongue? That's what you're saying, isn't it?

You're right about the valentine, though. It's odd that he knew it was her. It can always be explained that Draco knew because ROWLING knew, but... if Draco knew for some other reason, what was the reason? I've always wondered.

Although it wouldn't take that much attention to notice her arranging the valentine with the dwarf if he just happened to be THERE. No plot or anything, just happened to walk by or something while she was doing it, and he's spent enough time tormenting people with Weasley hair to notice it for possible future teasing.

That is exactly what I'm saying. Snape is a Legilimens remember, and all through the first book we are told how Harry feels that Snape can read minds. I wonder if Snape knew Harry was a Parseltongue but kept that knowledge to himself because he wasn't supposed to have used Legilimancy on a student without Dumbledore's say-so. So when the plan started to go tits up because the Weasleys hadn't noticed Ginny's involvement, then Snape went for the last-ditch effort by alerting Harry to Voldemort's plan by showing him his Parseltongue abilities. Because as Death Eaters, Lucius AND Snape would have been privy to the plan. There is no way that Snape would not have known about it, since he was working at Hogwarts.

I noticed the same thing about that part of CoS when I was listening to it on cd a couple of months ago. I am half tempted to write a bit of back-story for it.

Also, there is a discrepancy on the cd. It says that Ginny's eyes are bright green but the book says brown (this is from when Harry is going up to Ron's room and sees a pair of eyes peeking out at him from a crack in a door). Did anyone who listened to it on cd notice that as well?

I've not listened to the Audio books but the reader probably got confused between Harry and Ginny's eyes and it didn't get picked up in beta.

I am including my ideas in my current fanfics, but I, too, am tempted to write a small drabble but I know me and small drabbles, they turn into giant fanfics! LOL Refraction started that way, and so did Irae Culpa.

I am also curious as to why Draco called out Spitefully, as opposed to using a tone injected with vindictive glee.
