Points to ponder

A thought occured to me a few days ago whilst I was thnking about one of my fanfics, and I thought I'd turn it into a 'Points to Ponder' column (along with the Character insights column that I've not forgotten about, by the way). So here it is:

In 'Chamber of Secrets' (the book), how did Draco know that it was Ginny that had sent Harry the Valantine?

Now for my tuppenceworth, it might possibly have been a leap of logic on Draco's part, considering the 'Look Potter, you've got yourself a girlfriend' comment from Flourish and Blotts but there are a great number of girls in Hogwarts, how did Draco know that it was Ginny that sent the singing Valantine?

Here is the quote from canon:

"Malfoy was looking furious, and as Ginny passed him to enter her classroom, he yelled spitefully after her, 'I don't think Potter liked your Valantine much!'

Ginny covered her face with her hands and ran into class."

Of course he could have seen her arranging the Valantine with the dwarf, but I think it's curious that Malfoy would pay that much attention.

I'm not trying to fabricate some sort of canon relationship, god no, I am looking at it from a 'How involved is Draco' point of view. I am wondering how he came to know about the Valantine. Perhaps Lucius had instructed him to keep an eye on Ginny, which would imply a higher degree of involvement than his later statement in the Polyjuice chapter attests to. Curious don't you think? What are your thoughts?

Also, as an aside, I am sure Snape told Draco to use that 'Serpensortia' spell so that Harry would discover his Parseltongue ability. Which kinda goes with my 'Lucius is a good guy' theory. Which interestingly enough, is FURTHER supported by something ELSE I just found in the 'Polyjuice' chapter where Draco tells Ron and Harry (in their guises as Crabbe and Goyle), that "Father says to keep my head down and let the heir of Slytherin get on with it. He says the school needs ridding of all the mudblood filth, but not to get mixed up in it."

Lex.
