The sign on the door said closed, yet the door was unlocked, which wasn't as odd as one might think. Especially with this owner: she seemed to trust everyone. Ellery walked into the bakery and frowned. No one was behind the counter and, with the tinkle of the door chime, no one appeared from the back.

"Hello?" she called out, moving toward the register. "Liz!"

"Back here!" she heard, coming from the kitchen. Ellery shook her head and laughed slightly as she stepped around the display case that, that morning, had contained a dozen different types of truffle. Now, however, the desserts were looking a little peaked for the afternoon rush.

"It's nearly time for all the hoity-toits to come in for tea," Ellery announced as she stepped behind the counter and helped herself to a cup of coffee. Dropping two sugar cubes into the steaming mug, the brunette continued into the back, where the owner of the bakery was sitting on one of the stools pilfered from the counter, enthralled in a cookbook and bouncing a wooden spoon on her knee.

"What's apple nougat?" the blonde asked, glancing up from the book for a moment to acknowledge her friend.

"I don't think that's a real thing," Ellery replied, taking a sip of her coffee. "Where did you find that?" she asked, pulling the book away. It had to be at least a hundred years old.

"Jade's," Liz replied, making a face as she tried to blow the stray hairs off her face. Setting the spoon down, she reached up to remove her glasses and wiped them on the underside of her apron. "I always get first crack at anything that comes in."

"How much did this cost you?" Ellery asked, flipping through the worn pages, smiling at the penmanship of Central City-old.

Liz shrugged and wiped at a smudge of flour on her apron before turning to glance back at the oven, where some tarts were currently caramelizing under the broiler. "You'd be surprised how far free pie'll get you in this town."
