Tally stared at her boyfriend for a moment and, when his eyebrow went up, followed by a smirk, she rolled her eyes and took a chance to duck under his arm.

"Hey!" Max called after her, turning as she moved quickly to the sink. He made a face as she filled the mug in her hand with juice and proceeded to try and ignore him.

"Why are you so mean to me?" Max asked, leaning against the counter. After a moment of silence, his eyes narrowed. "I know you can hear me, woman."

Tally's head shot up and she gave him a look that could, quite possibly, kill. It took Max a moment to realize why she'd looked at him like that; he was so used to hearing his mothers call each other 'woman', that it didn't occur to him it might be impolite.

Tally knew both El and Dree, of course, and knew they called each other that, out of love. Her jaw locked as Max moved over to stand behind her. His arms wrapped around her, and his chin rested on her shoulder, once again.

"Sorry," Max whispered against her neck, so she could feel and hear his apology.

Tally was glad he couldn't see her face, though, because she felt a rush in her stomach.

He loved her.
