Mel set the basket of clean laundry on the bed and made a face, hearing her two-month-old crying in the nursery. "Nap's over," she sighed, and headed back toward the hallway. "I hear you," she said in a soothing tone, turning into the nursery. Pulling her t-shirt over her head as she entered the room, Mel moved toward the crib and tossed her shirt on the changing table.

Daniel's cries were getting sharper as she leaned over the side of the crib. His face was red, his tiny fists were clenched, and his whole body shook with each intake of air. "Oh, no," she murmured as she reached down and picked up the newborn. "Such a fuss."

He was already warm as she settled him against her shoulder, feeling the heat of his little body against her cooler skin. "I know, I know," she whispered, taking care to sit down in the rocking chair. He was always far more fussy when his tummy woke him from a nap. "Thought you had a full tummy after breakfast," she said, shifting him into a better position for feeding.

Daniel stopped crying almost immediately, making Mel wonder if there was just something about a baby's center of gravity that knew the difference between lying down for a nap and lying down for feeding.

As he latched on, Mel hooked a finger under his clenched fist, smiling as his hand relaxed and Daniel's tiny fingers closed around hers. "Don't you fall asleep on me, kiddo," she whispered. Leaning her head against the chair back, Mel closed her eyes and wondered how long it would be before Daniel fell asleep again.

A moment later, her nose crinkled and her eyes opened. "Oh, Daniel," she groaned, pulling her finger from his grip so she could swat the air. Daniel didn't seem to be phased, though.

"Bad as your daddy," she huffed, and wondered how much of a racket he would make if she stopped his meal long enough to get him into a new diaper.
