"I pro-mise," Max tells his teacher with a nod. "I know the way." Mel isn't there to get him, but his teacher doesn't want him to be alone in the classroom. How hard will it be to get to her office, anyway? He makes the trip twice a day, every day.

Once she's convinced he'll get home in one piece - well, at least to Mel's office - his teacher lets him leave. Max walks down one side of the corridor, following the usual traffic of the space station. His journey is going just fine when a scuffle in the junction ahead causes him to stop and step back against the wall.

People are running up from three different directions to stop the argument, and he knows better than to get in the way. But, he needs to go down the corridor they are all blocking, because that's the way to Mel's office.

He can go back the way he came - back to the classroom - and wait, or he can go another way. There's a hallway they go past, each trip, and if he goes to the next junction, he can just take that corridor, circling back. With a nod and a deep breath, Max runs past the scuffle, and stops when he's sure he's well out of the way of everyone.

He switches to the other side of the corridor, now going against traffic, but he knows that he needs to follow this wall when he gets to the next junction. He keeps one hand on the wall as he walks, because nothing looks familiar. At the first junction, Max turns and finds an empty hallway. There should be a connection up ahead, so he walks a little faster.

There should be more people in this corridor.

He's walked for a good minute and still hasn't found a junction. Stopping, Max looks back the way he came and tries to stay calm. He wishes he was back on the ship, because he knows every single corner of the Calypso. He only knows one little piece of this station, and it is most definitely not this part.

Where is the junction? Maybe, he thinks, he just didn't go far enough. With a shaky breath, Max breaks into a run, heading further down the hallway. He wants to go home, right now. And the sooner he finds Mel's office, the faster he can get home.

Max breathes a little easier when he finds the junction and turns into it, but halfway down, he realizes this isn't a place where he should be at all. He hears some voices and knows he'll be in trouble if he gets caught, so he ducks into a small gap in the bulkhead, just big enough for him to hide.

He tries to be silent as the noise gets louder; a team of soldiers marches past, and Max can tell by their clothes that they aren't regular station security. Now, he's really scared, but he has no way to find help. If he goes to one of the soldiers, he'll be in trouble. He can see a panel across the corridor, but he's too short to reach it, so he can't call Mel to find him.

Curling up in the small hiding place, Max wraps his arms around his legs and tries not to cry. He wants Rabbit. He wants Mel.

He wants to go home.
