"All right," Lurline said as she set a small bowl on the table. "It's time." Behind her, sitting on a small sofa, Adora closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
"It's gonna be all right," Dree assured, sitting next to her twin and taking the nervous woman's hands. Adora opened her eyes at the contact and stared at her mirror image. "Just take a deep breath," she added in a calm tone.
Adora pressed her lips tight, nodded and sucked in a deep breath. Noticing some movement, Dree looked up to see Ozma motioning to her. "You're not-" Adora started, tightening her hold on Dree's hands.
Shaking her head, Dree gave Adora another smile. "No, we're doing this one together." Tightening her hold on Adora's hands, she smiled and nodded. "I am staying right here."
"I'm sorry," Adora said, looking at Dree again. "I'm sorry I couldn't-" Dree shook her head and reached up to hold Adora's cheek.
"Don't you ever be sorry. Not with me." Dree gave her another smile and leaned to press a kiss to her sister's forehead. "This is a good thing," she nodded. "You deserve this."
Adora gave her a sad smile and managed to get out a shaky: "So do you." Dree smiled and nodded, feeling her own eyes starting to tear up.
"That's why you're gonna tell me everything." With a glance to Lurline, Dree nodded and leaned back.
Adora let go of Dree and quickly reached up to wipe at her eyes, then took another deep breath. Adora gave her a shaky smile and looked up to the blonde woman. "Will it hurt?"
Lurline simply smiled. "Yes. It will be fast, hard.. and painful." There was nothing she could do about that. Removing the jumble of memories and then reinserting just one set was tricky business. It was a task she really didn't want to fulfill, but it needed to be done.
Adora took another deep breath and nodded. "I'm ready."
Lurline moved to Adora's other side and sat down. "Close your eyes," she instructed. Watching with a calm smile, Lurline glanced from Adora to Dree, then reached up and traced her fingertip along Adora's brow. Raising her other hand, Lurline motioned for Dree to take Adora's hand again.
As Dree took Adora's right hand, Lurline took her left, then pressed a light kiss to Adora's temple. Adora jerked in place, sucking in a sharp breath. Lurline placed her free hand on Adora's shoulder and held the blonde steady as the memories worked back into place.
Dree winced as she watched Adora shake, somehow knowing exactly what the woman was experiencing with each twitch. The sound that escaped Adora's lips, Dree knew all to well, as it was a sound she'd never been able to forget, no matter how long she'd lived. She fought with Lurline, keeping Adora's hands down while the woman tried to fight, reaching for the invisible grip on her neck.
A moment later, Adora gasped for air and her eyes snapped open. She sucked in short, sharp breaths, her eyes trying to focus on anything and everything. "It's all right," Dree assured, "it's all right." Tears were already streaming down Adora's cheeks as she leaned against Dree, holding on to her for dear life.
"It's over," Dree repeated in a soothing tone, as if she was trying to calm one of the children out of a nightmare. She smoothed Adora's hair and pressed light kisses to her forehead. "It's over."
After a few more sharp intakes of breath, Adora started to calm herself. "No," she said, shaking her head against Dree's shoulder. Sitting up, Adora reached up and wiped at her eyes. "It's not over yet."
She needed to see Kenna. She needed to know that this had worked.
Only then would it be over.
