"I can have boo, peas," Max asked, holding up a yellow crayon to his mother. Dree set down her own orange crayon and pushed the pile of colors around until she found the blue one.

"Boo," she said, holding the crayon out for her three-year-old. Max twisted slightly to reach it and then went back to his masterpiece. She watched for a moment as he added the color to his project, and she smiled. "I like that," she nodded, giving him a smile when he looked up at her.

They were currently sitting at the desk in the living room, Max in her lap, making a birthday card for Chapel. They still had a few days, but she was going to be at a summit and they were going to have to celebrate her birthday early.

"Mommy," Max sighed as he set down the crayon. Leaning back, Max tilted his head back so that he could look up at his mother, while she looked straight down at him. "Ha'cm we do naw," he asked, as the back of his head moved side to side against her chest, "say Ha-bufday for you?"

Dree couldn't help but smile, as he was getting better with his words every day. "You don't have to say Happy Birthday to me, Maxie," she told him with a smile, before leaning down to kiss his nose. Max gave her a look and sat upright, then turned himself around in her lap. As he moved, Dree leaned back to give him room, then wrapped her arms around him as he settled against her.

"Bu, you say Ha-bufday to me and to Mel and to Da-yee and to Mazie and to-" he trailed off, simply because he needed to take a breath. Dree smiled again and rocked him slightly as she kissed his hair. "I ga-say it to you."

She didn't have the heart to tell him that she didn't like celebrating her birthday. In fact, she didn't even remember when her birthday was. Of course, if she'd thought about it long enough, Dree might be able to narrow it down to a month, maybe even a year.

But, as old as she knew she was, keeping track just put it out there. And for someone who always liked to disappear into the background, Dree was now finding herself out in front.

Max's eyes focused on the calendar sitting near the edge of the desk, with the sparkly sticker marking his Godmother's birthday. Putting on his best pout, Max looked up to Dree and pleased: "Peas, Mommy. Tew me when to say Ha-bufday."

Dree opened her mouth, but closed it again, because the sound of her husband's voice made both of them look up. From the doorway, Trey - who had just woken up for his shift - simply responded: "Oh three oh seven." Dree raised an eyebrow, not sure where that number came from, but she definitely knew it wasn't right. But, when Max twisted to look up at her, she could only make a face.

Trey moved over to the desk and motioned for Max to come to him. Max put his arms up and Trey pulled him off Dree's lap, then leaned over to give his wife a kiss. Max laughed as he hung upside down. "Ki-ki!" Dree gave Trey a look, then leaned up so that she could give Max another kiss.

Just before Trey went on duty, Dree caught him at the door. "Halt, Donovan." Raising an eyebrow at his smirk, she tried to ignore him and shook her head. "Why did you tell him that?"

Trey smirked and pulled her into a close hug, then kissed her neck. "'cause it's the truth," he mumbled against her skin. Dree made another face and pulled back, trying to keep his focus on the conversation and not making out. Giving her a hurt look, Trey sighed and shook his head. "The boy wants to know when his mother's birthday is. So, I told him."

"You made that up," Dree told him.

"I did not," he replied, half-chuckling and half-gasping. "Three seven," he repeated, "twenty-seven seventeen." Placing a kiss on her nose, Trey added: "On.. the.. nose." When he could see that she wasn't making the connection, Trey smiled even brighter. "That's the day and time El introduced us."

The look on her face as Dree finally put it together made him smile. "You introduced yourself to me as Audree, and Audree is Max's mother. So..." he nodded.

"So that's my birthday," Dree concluded. "I hate when you're perfect." Trey smirked and pulled her in for another kiss.
