Cordelia Bennett sat on the bench at the train station, watching the people of San Francisco go by about their business, as if she wasn't even there. It wasn't a new feeling for her, sadly, as she was a child, a girl. She wasn't old enough to catch the boys' eyes; she wasn't strong enough to do any sort of labor.

She was just a child with a suitcase; waiting for someone to claim her, like a piece of lost luggage.

Inside the station, the telegraph operator glanced out the window and saw that she was still sitting there. Upon her arrival, she'd given him an envelope with a message to be sent, as well as payment that had already been arranged in Chicago. He'd sent word back of her safe arrival and directed her to the bench, to wait for her collector.

But, no one had arrived.

Cordelia watched as some lumber fell off a wagon down on the street, and a few men stopped what they were doing to help reload the materials. That wouldn't have happened in Chicago, she thought. Raising her eyes, Cordelia took another look at this new city, where she was going to live. It wasn't the same as Chicago at all.

It was rougher, dirtier. The air smelled... different.

She wanted to go home. Back to Maggie, back to Chicago.
