Saving You, Part 2

Luke Skywalker stifled a yelp as his chin made hard contact with the cold metal floor. His attacker had gone down with him and landed with knees in the middle of Luke’s back, causing bones and muscles to flare with pain. With an angry growl, Luke used his weight to halfway roll over, dislodging…a boy.

Perhaps he’d jarred his brain a bit too much, he thought, and shook his head to clear it. No, didn’t change anything. He was looking at a red-faced, dark-haired boy. The boy scowled at him, rolled over to get up.

“Oh, no you don’t.” Luke reached out and caught the tail end of his shirt and gave a hard jerk, causing the attacker to fall back hard on his ass. A string of Corellian spewed from his mouth and Luke winced as he recognized a few of Han’s favorite words.

“Shut…up!” Luke stared at him, exasperated but with a growing sense of amusement.

The boy clamped his mouth shut, watching Luke warily.

Luke sighed and slowly picked himself off the floor. The boy scrambled back a couple of meters but stopped when Luke raised his eyebrows at him and gave him a warning look. “Stay.”

Rubbing at his already throbbing chin, Luke discovered a trail of blood running from a cut on his lip. He gently probed at it while using his tongue to make sure he had no loose teeth.

“Well, it’s nice to meet you too.” Luke stared at him, perplexed. He looked like he was maybe…eleven…twelve. Luke’s experience with children was limited. Although there were a few traveling with the rebellion, Luke hadn’t had much contact with them. And what the hell was a kid doing on Vader’s ship anyway? Was he a stowaway? A bastard child of one of the officer’s? A captive? Neither answer seemed quite right.

Luke slowly walked closer. He saw a flare of something in the boy’s eyes. A little fear and a lot of defiance. “You can get up now.” The boy rose smoothly to his feet and warily watched Luke as he circled round him.

He was dressed too well to be a stowaway. The material of his clothes was expensive as were his boots. He didn’t look like he’d been missing any meals either. He looked too healthy. And although his hair was a bit long, it was clean and obviously kept trimmed.

He had spoken Corellian. No, Luke quickly corrected himself, he had cursed in Corellian. But was he from Corellia, like Han Solo? Just looking at him, Luke couldn’t determine that.

“What’s your name?”

The boy raised his chin up and firmly closed his lips, stood straight and stiff and with his hands clasped behind his back.

“Ahhhh…so you’re going to be stubborn. Showing your age, aren’t you.” Luke hid a smile as he saw the boy jerk. Luke moved closer and reached a hand out. The boy watched him out of the corner of his eye but didn’t move. Right before Luke touched him…he stopped. He felt…what? It was an odd feeling, an almost something feeling.

“The Force.” Luke’s voice was but a faint whisper but the boy heard him and paled, for the first time looking truly frightened.

Not only was there the enigma of what a child was doing on the ship, but the added puzzle of his being Force sensitive. Slowly Luke withdrew his hand. The boy brought his arms up to his chest and crossed them as though cold.

“Are you cold? I’ve been cold since I was brought on board this ship.” He waited a moment but got no response. “My name is Luke…but perhaps you already know that.” Watching closely, he saw a flicker of something in the dark eyes. “What’s your name? I have a friend from Corellia. Is that where you’re from?”

The boy turned his head slightly, lowered his eyes until he was staring at Luke’s boots. But he was still listening intently.

“Why are you here on this ship? Did…someone bring you here?”

The boy roughly shook his head, hair falling over his face and hiding his eyes.

“Oh…you slipped on by yourself.” Luke watched closely but the boy didn’t react at all this time.

Luke opened his mouth to ask another question but one of the elevators along the passageway suddenly opened and several men stepped out. Though Luke was only distracted for a moment, it was enough for the boy to make a break and run swiftly down the hallway to dart quickly into the closing elevator.

Luke had started after him but knew even as he did so, he’d be too late. The elevator doors slid silently shut and Luke found himself face to face with an older officer who wore a combination look of puzzlement and disdain on his face, as he looked Luke up and down.

“Is there a problem here?” Although, usually, Luke was not spoken to, just frowned at, this particular officer seemed not to have read the rules.

“No problem…Captain. I just needed to speak with that young boy who just got on the elevator.”

“I’m afraid that will not be possible. The elevators are…not on your list of accessible places.”

Luke took a deep, calming breath and tried not to commit the childish gesture of stomping his feet in frustration. “I…know that…sir. However, I had not finished my conversation with the boy…”

“There are no children on this ship. This is a military vessel.”

Luke stared at him in growing disbelief.

“I was speaking with him. He just ran past you into the elevator.”

“You are mistaken. I saw no one.” He looked to each side for confirmation from his companions. They nodded in agreement with him. “Perhaps you should return to your room?”

With a negligent wave of his hand, the officer continued on his way down the hallway with the other men following closely at his heels. Luke watched them with narrow eyes until they disappeared through another door.

Turning and placing his hands on his hips, he stared consideringly at the closed elevator doors. He didn’t have the code for this elevator. He supposed he could open it by using the Force but…that was probably not the best idea. For one thing, he had no clue where to go once he got on the elevator. Although he had sensed the boy earlier through the Force, he no longer could do so.

And there was also the question of what Vader would do if he went out of his boundaries. Luke cocked his head to the side and thought about his father. He might would be angry at Luke’s…disobedience. Luke rolled the interesting thought around in his mind.

After a few moments, he reluctantly discarded his idea of somehow pursuing the boy. The likely result of any attempts would be further restriction of Luke’s movement. He had no immediate desire to be banished to his room and behind locked doors.

Walking slowly back down the hallway he thought about this newest twist in his extended stay on the star destroyer. It was a military vessel as the officer had stated. And as such, should not have a young boy as a passenger.

Entering his assigned room he sprawled out in the surprisingly comfortable chair and turned on the Holonet though he gazed at it without any interest. Imperial bullshit, all of it. He idly punched at the controls, cruising through a myriad of information.

Finally, he stopped on an old program he vaguely remembered watching years ago with his friends on Tatooine. It seemed strangely simple now, the actors silly in their portrayals. His horizons had broadened quite a lot over the past few years.

He must have nodded off to sleep again because the next thing he knew, his view of the screen was blocked by gleaming metal. Looking up, he saw that one of his father’s droids stood in front of him and seemed to be waiting for a response to something.

“What? What is it?” He pushed himself up from his reclining position, feeling an odd sense of embarrassment at having been caught sleeping again.

“Lord Vader requests that you join him in his chambers in half a standard hour from now.”

Luke looked at the droid quizzically, not sure that he’d heard it correctly.

“Sir? What may I tell him?”

“I’ll…be there.”

“Very good, sir. I shall inform him.” The droid turned and walked out the door.

Almost half an hour later, freshly showered and clothes changed, Luke stood in the hallway outside Vader’s rooms. He tugged self-consciously at his jacket. Though the ship did not seem quite as cold as it had, Luke decided he’d be better prepared this time. He’d found having a conversation with his father difficult enough, he could do without his teeth chattering too.

Just when his hand was reaching for the intercom, the door slid open. He peered into the dim room, then with a sigh stepped in. The door slid shut behind him.

Vader was seated in front of a viewscreen, looking at another scroll of information. As Luke walked towards him, he clicked it off and turned to watch his son.

“I’ve had your dinner brought in here, Luke. I hope you don’t mind.”

Luke stopped a few meters away and blinked. After his father’s words finally registered, he turned his head to see his dinner spread out at a small table, a chair pulled out invitingly.

“No, I don’t mind.” Luke walked over and seated himself. The droid who’d delivered Vader’s earlier message, suddenly materialized from one of the other rooms and began uncovering Luke’s food and then poured a drink for him out of a larger bottle of light green liquid.

Vader slowly began pacing the room and Luke eyed him warily. This was…different. To be in the Dark Lord’s company twice in one day. Now to be sharing a meal…well, almost…was a new development.

“What about you?”

“I have already partaken of my meal.”

So the Dark Lord’s ability or inability to consume food in a natural manner would continue to remain a mystery.

Luke slowly sampled the items on his plate and discovered that it was all considerably spicier than his usual bland food. Some items he recognized, some he didn’t.

For a while, Luke was content to eat and slowly sip on the strong-flavored green wine. His eyes continued to follow his father who finally had stopped in front of the large window.

There was a certain…companionship?…between them. They were at ease with each other for the moment and neither seemed to feel the need for much talk. Luke had so many questions for the man but he also had a strong disinclination to interrupt their suddenly found camaraderie.

After a while though, the silence began to weigh heavier on Luke’s mind. With a sudden sense that he was wasting a good opportunity, Luke pushed his plate away. The droid materialized again to pour him another glass of wine before taking the other dishes out of the room.

“Why do you keep me here?”

Vader turned halfway to face Luke but took so long to answer that Luke had to use a lot of self-control to keep himself from squirming under the black gaze.

“I keep you here so that you will be safe.”

Luke turned his father’s words over in his head.

“Safe? Safe from what?”

“Safe from those who would wish harm to come to you.”

Luke silently cursed the voice modulator that filtered out most of the inflections there may have been in Vader’s voice.

“But not you?”

“I…do not wish any harm to come to you, either by my hand or someone else’s.”

“That’s a change from only a few months ago.” Although Luke was able to keep his voice even and unchallenging, a certain sarcasm had crept into it.

“Luke…I do…regret…what happened between us.”

“Which part do you regret? Our battle? My injury? Giving one of my best friends to a bounty hunter? Using Han and Leia and Chewbacca to trap me?”

For a moment, Luke thought he might have gone too far this time. He somehow thought his father did not take any type of criticism or accusation well. He felt a sudden regret over surely losing future opportunities to be in his father’s company.

But Vader was as unpredictable as ever and surprised Luke by giving a sudden hiss of mechanical laughter. “You are a very stubborn young man, Luke.”

Vader resumed his slow pacing, his hands clasped behind his back. “Perhaps I do regret…my methods.”

Luke stared at his father wonderingly, realizing he’d just gotten the closest thing to an apology as he was likely to get from this man.

After a while, Luke’s mind returned to examine some of Vader’s previous statements. “You said that you keep me here so that I will be safe from those who would harm me. Who wants to harm me?”

“There are many who would…use you against me…if they knew of our relationship. Who would wish you injury, not only for being involved with the Rebellian but for being the son of…” He stopped then and Luke waited for him to continue but he did not.

“For being the son of Anakin Skywalker.”

“Yes…”

“Would…one of those wishing me harm be the Emperor?”

“Yes.”

“He knows that I am your son. Does he know that I am here with you?”

Vader walked over to the chair opposite Luke’s and grasped the high back of it with his hands.

“He does not know that you are here and I would like to keep it that way. Soon I will have a safer place for you.”

“Another cage.” Luke winced as the words escaped his mouth but he felt a certain sense of dismay at the implication of a rather long captivity.

“Only for your safety, Luke.”

“I could go back to the Alliance.”

“I have considered that option but it is not viable for the long run. You may also consider the idea that you being among them may concentrate…my attention, at the Emperor’s command.”

“So I’m to disappear. For how long? I am not a coward, Father. Nor am I used to letting others fight my battles.”

Before the Dark Lord could respond, the intercom began to buzz at about the same time as an alarm began blaring through the ship. Vader swiftly crossed the room and punched a button.

Luke could hear a voice but not distinguish all the words. He rose hurriedly from his seat and walked closer to Vader. “…incoming…ship…on the bridge…”

Switching off the intercom, Vader stalked toward the door, black cape billowing out behind him and mirroring his sudden agitation. Stopping again suddenly, he turned to look at Luke.

“I am sorry for the interruption, Luke. We will continue the conversation at a later time.”

Even as Luke’s mouth opened to answer him, he was gone and the door sliding closed behind him.

Luke stood staring at the closed metal door as if it could provide some kind of coherent answers. Stretching out with the Force, he sensed the tension of the ship’s crew but not specifically what the sudden uproar was about. His father’s presence was moving rapidly away from him.

“Well, shit. Finally his tongue loosens and they call him away.”

Reluctantly, Luke walked towards the door. It was late in the day, if not for the alarms the ship would have been close to changing over to its night mode.

He could go back to his room and try to go back to sleep. Or…he could stay here and wait for his father’s return. Turning, he walked through the large room and through the doorway to a smaller one that contained a bed. Throwing himself across the end of it, he wriggled around until he was comfortable.

“Well, he did say I was stubborn…”
