So, I've watched the first four episodes of Merlin so far.
gekidasa started gushing to me about Merlin while I was gone on Christmas vacation, and as I recall my reaction was "okay, I'll download it WHEN I GET HOME. I promise." I figured I'd like it. I didn't figure it would be quite so awesome.
Merlin is my favorite, as he's a snarky, bitchy commoner with little to no respect for authority/nobility. He's a naturally powerful warlock, something that hasn't been known before, and as a result firmly believes in his own specialness. It's this that makes him do stuff no other commoner would ever dream of doing - namely snark at the prince of the realm.
That would be Arthur, the prototypical spoiled prince, but one with an extremely well-developed sense of honor and life of never quite living up to his father's impossible expectations. Arthur is obviously, undoubtedly a brat, but he's an interesting one. He's got a heavy weight on his shoulders - as he's Arthur of Camelot - and he's been kowtowed to all his life by everyone except his father and his father's ward, Morgana. Merlin, however, doesn't bother sugarcoating anything - in fact he loves bitching right back at Arthur - and I think that the novelty of it is initially the reason Arthur doesn't just toss him out on his ear (for real). Later, I suspect it's because Arthur likes having someone who is going to just tell it like it is he thinks it is. :D
At the same time, Merlin needs Arthur, because dealing with him teaches him some skills that he was distinctly lacking, namely patience (well, a modicum of patience) and some more sympathy. Watching Arthur deal with all the crap that comes along with being the prince under a powerful king gives him a little sympathy for a class that he hasn't had much respect for before.
Anyway, I've only watched the first four episodes so far, so a lot more to go, but so far I really like this. :D
