Buffy’s heart didn’t break when Faith finally left, packing up in the middle of the night, leaving without so much as a note. No, Buffy’s heart didn’t even skip a beat.
She’d be back. She always came back. She was Faith, and she needed Buffy.
At least that’s what Buffy told herself for the first three months.
Buffy’s heart didn’t flutter when she opened the mailbox one day to find Faith’s sketchy handwriting on the back of a postcard. Flutter was too calm a word for what her heart was doing that day.
‘Hey B,
Just wanted you to know...I’m not coming back.
Still yours though,

Buffy wondered when she’d actually claimed Faith as hers. She wondered when Faith had actually given in.
Buffy didn’t miss Faith for that year and a half. She didn’t wonder what Faith was up to. She heard bits and pieces of her whereabouts, here and there. Apparently Faith still kept in contact with Giles. No, Buffy didn’t worry.
‘Faith’s missing.’
Faith’s been gone for nearly two years, but in the last two days when she’s actually been gone...Buffy feels like her entire world’s been torn apart.
Two months with no word from Faith and Buffy gets another surprise. But it’s not a postcard. It’s not even a letter. It’s a box.
‘We found her Buffy.
Thought you should have this.

Angel.’
It’s odd that the first thing Buffy’s mind registers is that Angel isn’t hers; hasn’t been for a long time.
Buffy’s heart didn’t shatter that day. It couldn’t, it wasn’t hers anymore. She wonders how long her heart’s been missing. As long as Faith?
Buffy didn’t cry that day either. With Faith’s jacket wrapped tightly around her, she wonders how long it’s been Faith’s heart in her hearts place.
