I dislike morons who can't even use Wikipedia to research.
Case in point? Last night's NCIS.
There is no such thing as acetone hydroxide. Meaning it can't have a characteristic odor upon explosion, which isn't something acetone-based explosives are known for anyways. And it also can't blow up a car like that.
The explosive your researchers were thinking of was acetone peroxide. Except it doesn't have a characteristic odor like that. It also doesn't cause cars to turn into obliterated fireball-ish wrecks unless you are much better with it than I am (you aren't. you can't actually be bad with this stuff) . And making it can be done with a short trip to the drugstore for three bottles and a cheap pan from the grocery store; this implies a trained monkey can make it, so try focusing on high school students instead of assuming its from the military -- trust me, if we can create a bigger, better explosion then we will and damn the consequences.
This is all readily available off wikipedia. And Google. And any first year science student, maybe even some really bored 11th and 12 graders. When you refer for an entire hour about something that doesn't exist, you look like a Grade-A fool.
Maybe we should try avoiding that next time?
