When I was a kid one of my favorite parts of this season was the gift wrapping. All those colors to play with! All those crisp, clean lines of paper folded just so and then held by tape that, when you ran your thumbnail along it the right way, was nearly invisible. It was altogether magical and I couldn't wait to have this tradition in my own home. Of course, it would be modified a little because I would never buy some of the gaudy and blatantly commercialized papers that my mother seemed to love.
I think I can hear the other moms out there chuckling.
Yes, the joke is on me this year. I've had my own place for a long time now and this is the first year that I can remember getting truly excited about Christmas... and gift wrapping. I think I've finally figured out that it was never the colors and the bows that I loved. The part I truly loved was the hiding out in my mom's room giggling with my sisters. The whispered, "Guard the door!" and "What are you guys doing in there?" and the oh-so-sly "Can I come in?" In short, it was a family affair. Silly me, to try and stifle that with 'classy' wrapping paper and perfect packages. Why is it that Mom is always right?
This year, our paper is electric blue with pink Christmas trees and lime green with purple reindeer. Trooper picked them out all by himself and the boys and I are having lots of fun wrapping together and then trying to outdo each other with the bows. I'd forgotten Christmas could be this fun.
